Replacing Universal Joints in 1990 Chev Pickup

I have to replace my 2 universal joints on my 1990 chev 4x4, on the rear driveshaft.

I doubt it will be hard getting the old ones out :).

BUT putting the new ones in, do they just go in place easily on the shaft? Or must the cups be pressed in? or is it easy unboltbolt and replace?

Seems the last guy that did them had a bit of a hard time and used a vice to push the new universals in? He later realized he had the wrong universals and it SEEMED to go easier after getting the right ones... Will I need a vice to press these in?

    Your response appreciated.

a vice makes it 10x easier. use a vice and a socket that fits just inside u joint to press it in.

actually i put most of mine in, and remove them with an air hammer. takes a little finesse but its quick and easy.

I roll with the vise, plus hammer and socket method.

I'd ruin it with an air hammer.

ANY Tricks to doing it so you don't end up with the pins/bearings all over the shop floor and falling out?

Make sure you remove the inner clips before hammering...Do not ding or dent the drive shaft...and put a rag under you work area...A bad u joint is bad because the bearings are shot..I have seen them fallout all over like toothpicks and like fall out like dirt.....keep the new caps free from dirt.

    a couple tips:
go slow and check often to make sure the joint still spins freely. if it doesn't, meaning it kind of catches every now and then, one of the bearings, or several are out of place. they come pre greased to help avoid them falling out. still be careful, because they will still want to.

I will usually add more grease to the cup to make sure the needle bearings dont fall out. Dont be shocked if you ruin at least one cup trying to get it in. To avoid the headache, I have a machine shop near by that will press both joints in for $15, BEST money I can spend.

x2 on adding a dab of grease and just being careful.

You should be shocked if you ruin at least one cup. That's not right. I've never ruined one putting it together and I've done quite a few on the ground at off road parks and in driveways.

So the best thing to do is pound out the old Cup(s) with a socket...

When I go to put the new one in, your best suggestions is to add a dab more greese inside the cup? Im going to be tapping it with a socket and a hammer, so I am going to guess the bearing needles will want to fly out.

    Any other suggestions?

ive always used a press. makes it really quick and easy to do! if in doubt just take the driveshaft to a shop that has a press and have them do it. should be quick and cheap!
using a press you dont have to worry much about the needles falling out since your not wacking it with a hammer, just slow pressure to slide right in.

dont forget heat. i know my 92, as well as Black Sierra's 92 still had stock ujoints in them within the last year. you'll need to heat them up to melt out the factory injected plastic retainer. once its out, clean out the groove, and install your new joint.
