hey i have a 04 silverado 2500 6.0L. My check engine light has been on for a while now and its giving me the code P0455 and another one i cant remember. Ive tried a gas cap but no results. When i run the truck near empty it wont take the gas, its goes in 20 cents at a time then clicks off. Any have this problem or know how to fix it?? Its starting to grind my gears takin 10 minutes to put 20$ in lol..

Re: 04 silverado wont take gas???

The code indicates a leak in the evaporative emission control system (or a defective or loose gas cap but you've already checked that). The system collects gasoline vapors from the gas tank in a charcoal canister and, as you drive, the vapors are diverted to the combustion chamber and burned.

Before this, the vapors were just vented to atmosphere as you filled the tank. It's an environmental control.

If this system isn't allowing the vapors to be withdrawn from the gas tank, then as you add fuel there will be no place for the vapors to go. A small amount may escape from the filler neck, but it's probably not enough to help your situation. With the trapped vapors (instead of gasoline) consuming the volume of the tank, the gasoline dispenser sees this as a full tank and disables flow.

A mechanic could probably diagnose which components are defective, but that's the jist of how it works.

pull the gas nozzle out a little bit (but not too much) to vent

Under warranty still? What code is it throwing?
    Maybe DTC P0446 ?

    This may be your problem:
TSB:#02-06-04-037 DTC P0446 (Restricted/Blocked EVAP Vent Path) Set, Service Engine Soon (SES) Lamp Illuminated (Replace Hose/Evaporative Emission (EVAP) Canister Vent Asm) - (Jun 17, 2002)

Heres where to find it: pics and parts #s

Re: 04 silverado wont take gas???

I removed the EVAP canister and vent solenoid. i put power to the solenoid and i can hear it clicking but i cannot blow air through it, does this means its defective?? I couldnt find the part number on the drawings, i called the dealer and they want 220$ for a new one, anyone know where i can get one cheaper?

Re: 04 silverado wont take gas???

    Test Procedure:

    EVAP CANISTER VENT BLOCKED P0446

This DTC will determine if a restriction is present in the vent solenoid, vent filter, vent hose or canister.

    MALFUNCTION CRITERIA AND THRESHOLD VALUE(S):

    EXCESS VACUUM TEST - STAGE I :
    Vent solenoid commanded OPEN
Fuel Tank Vacuum ≥ 7 in. H2O for 2 seconds(monitored during initial purge ramp)
    OR
EXCESS VACUUM TEST - STAGE II :
Vent solenoid commanded OPEN during normal purge.
    Fuel Tank Vacuum ≥ 9.0 in. H2O for a time ≥ 23 seconds
    OR
    Vented Vacuum =< -2.5 in. H2O or
    Vented Vacuum => 5.0 in H20
    For 3 seconds after cold-start key-up.

    SECONDARY PARAMETERS AND ENABLE CONDITIONS:

    TEST ENABLE :
    MAP DTC’s not active
    Volt-DTC’s not active
    TP Sensor DTC’s not active
    VS Sensor DTC’s not active
    Coolant Sensor DTC’s not active
    O2 Sensor DTC’s not active
    IAT Sensor DTC’s not active
    Fuel Level >15.0% but < 85.0%
    PLM > .89
    System Voltage > 10V but < 18V

    COLD START TEST:
    ECT > 3.75C but < 30 C
    IAT > 3.75C but < 30 C
Cold Temp ΔC( ECT - IAT)<8.25C if ECT > IAT
    BARO > 75.0 kPa

    WEAK VACUUM TEST -Stage I:
    Tank Vacuum ≥ 9 in. H2O within a value 40 integral seconds.

    TIME LENGTH AND FREQUENCY:

EXCESS VACUUM TEST - STAGE II :
    180 seconds

    Once per cold start at:
    • Power-up
    • Excess Vac. Stage I
    • Excess Vac. Stage II
Test must complete within 360, 420 ,460, 525, or 600 seconds from when purge is enabled, Depending on application

EVAP. Emission Control System Malfunction P0455

This DTC will detect a weak vacuum condition (large leak or restriction) in the EVAP. system.

    MALFUNCTION CRITERIA ANDTHRESHOLD VALUE(S):

WEAK VACUUM TEST- STAGE I (Cold Test):
Tank Vacuum < 11 in. H2O for a time greater than (30-80 integral seconds) depending on application.

WEAK VACUUM TEST- STAGE II PASS CRITERIA(Warm Test):
Stage I test failed previous trip and this trip.
Passes if Tank Vac. > 11 in. H2O
Note: Stage II can only report a pass

    SECONDARY PARAMETERS AND ENABLE CONDITIONS:

    TEST ENABLE :
    MAP DTC’s not active
    Volt-DTC’s not active
    TP Sensor DTC’s not active
    VS Sensor DTC’s not active
    O2 Sensor DTC’s not active
    Coolant Sensor DTC’s not active
    IAT Sensor DTC’s not active
    Fuel Level >15.0% but < 85.0%
Power-up Vacuum Test Fail = False
    PLM > .89
    System Voltage > 10V but < 18V

    COLD START TEST:
    ECT > 3.75C but < 30 C
    IAT > 3.75C but < 30 C
Cold Temp ΔC( ECT - IAT)<8.25C if ECT > IAT
    BARO > 75.0 kPa

    TIME LENGTH AND FREQUENCY:

    WEAK VACUUM TEST- STAGE I
(Cold Test): Fault present for an integral time ≥ 50, or 70sec.
    depending on application.

Test must complete within 360, 420 ,460, 525, or 600 seconds from when purge is enabled, Depending on application

WEAK VACUUM TEST- STAGE II (Warm Test): Fault present for a time ≥ 1400 sec. This is the maximum test time length.

    Once per cold start.
