    Re: cam retard ?

the cam should never be out of time i think you mean that the ignition timing is out and if so then all you need to do is losen th distributor and then adjust it to spec. with a timing light or you can just do it by hear till it sounds good enough for you. but i believe that the timing on those engines is controlled by the pcm so there shouldn't be any problems with timing, i would look in other directions

    Re: cam retard ?

Your cam retard should be -2 to +2 so yours is off and is probably why the truck is not running right. You will have to set the cam retard by hooking up a scanner that reads cam retard, loosening the distributor hold down clamp, and reving the engine up to 1500 rpms while turning the distributor until you get the cam retard into the range mentioned above. Tighten the hold down clamp and recheck the cam retard to make sure its still within specs.

Vortec V6 and Vortec V8 is +/- 2 degrees. My Chilton says the V6 dist is not adjustable, not sure about that.

10 degrees won't cause the issues he describes, but, yes, it should be corrected

I agree that 10 degrees wont cause the problem, my 305 was at -11 for a while and was only slightly noticeable during one condition, over 45 mph on a slight downhill slope and it would misfire once in a while.

It could be that the distributor gear is getting worn.

The pictures of the 4.3 distributor in my service manual show that the hold down clamp is actually part of the distributor and it states that the 4.3 distributor is nonadjustable.

JeremyB is correct. The Vortec 4300 has a much wider spec for the cam retard then the V8's do.
