Hey I have a 1998 Chevy 1500 with the 5.7 and I am having problems with the speedometer, sometimes when driving the speedometer stops working, as in if your going 35 the needle will drop to 0 then back to your current speed then drops to 0, then after doing that for awhile it will act fine. Is this a common problem and how do I fix it?

My dads 2004 1500 silverado had this problem too. His was fixed under a recall. But I'm not sure if yours is covered under the recall. Hope this can help!

I would get another gauge cluster and test it, their pretty cheep at a salvage yard, or someone here will have one. Does your transmission act up when your speedometer isn't working right? If your speed sensor is bad it will mess with all kinds of things including your transmission.

My moms 05 speedo is like 60-80 mph faster than what you are going. Is there a recall on that year too? What could cause this?

Stepper motor maybe in the speedo? You are better off upgrading to a Escalade or Denali cluster. This way you get the 120mph speedo & aqua blue tint instead of the white with orange needles.

Does your odometer act up when it happens? I'm pretty sure its your cluster. I upgraded mine to the Escalade for $80 at a salvage yard. You should be able to get a good used cluster for under $40

My Escalade cluster installed with my original odometer

    Re: speedometer problem

Yea that looks similar except the 120mph which i should never need(not) so once I get one how do I install it? It hasn't acted up for a couple of days/whenever my dad is riding with.

This is mine. Looks familiar eh?
Also it seems that the gas gauge is moving kinda like vibrating. I don't mind it or the speedometer prob but for some reason the cops around here have been out in full force and stopping people for doing as little as 3mph over so I get a little excited when a roller is in front with the radar gun.

    Re: speedometer problem

It is a straight forward swap. You just pull the old one & drop the new one in place by pulling the dash/bezel out. Be sure to put the gear shift in 1st & adjust the tilt steering to help you get everything out.

Ok I'll have to look for one then try to swap it. But I need to find a salvage yard and a flat surface.

    Re: speedometer problem

Salvage yard, car-parts.com, or ebay. I picked mine up for $34.95 with free shipping off of ebay. It was from a wrecked 2000 Denaili versus an Escalade. The Escalade ones were going for $100 or so.

Be sure to have torx screws so you can swap the odometer to maintain accurate mileage. While the cluster is out, you should replace or swap out the bulbs so you will not have to pull it again.

Thanks for the tips/resources and replacing the bulbs because the oil and the water pressure bulbs are out. Also why do I need to have it in 1st?

    Re: speedometer problem

It makes it easier because the gear shift will cause an obstacle in the bezel/cluster removal. You can always remove the shifter lever as an alternative.
