so yesterday after leaving the lake i noticed my ac wasn't very cold and eventually was just room temp by the time i got home. so i go out today to start the truck up and go to a friends house and i hear this hissing noise, well turns out there is a puncture in the condenser and now im too scared to start it and drive it. i dont have the money to fix it now but my main question is will it be alright to drive around for a few day? sorry for the long post

    thanks- alex

as long as you don't run the a/c and lock up the compressor.

you can unplug the a/c comp that way if you accidently push the a/c button on the comp wont turn on.

once the a/c pressure drops to unsafe levels(for compressor life), the system won't turn on anyway, totally safe to drive

The condenser price is not gonna be the big part of the expense. You will have to get the system evacuated and filled. You should also change the accumulator because it has the desiccant in it that should be changed every time the system is opened.

Accumulators are not that badly priced, under $50 usually, probably wouldn't hurt to change the orifice tube as well, it divides the system between high and low pressures and has a screen that also acts as a filter, another cheap under $10 part. Just a little pm while you got the system open.

Dunno what it would cost. In the area I now live A/C is not used much.

Re: AC condenser has a leak/hole

Just did this on my '89.

Condensor was $180.00 (didn't change out anything else).
Local shop charged $75.00 to vacuum and fill. Might be less for a pickup, my Suburban has rear ac which and takes more refrigerant.
The crumple zone in my OOBS is the other guy's car.

If you pull the electrical connector on the compressor clutch, the A/C won't run; go ahead and run the heat. When you pull that little plug make sure it is in a safe place where belts/pulleys can't eat it. Maybe some zip ties.
