    2wd 10-bolt differential vs. 4wd 10-bolt differential

I recently stripped some teeth off my rear differential ring gear. I don't have the money just yet to replace it with quality parts. Is it possible to pull the differential assembly out of a 10-bolt 2wd housing and swap it into my 10-bolt 4wd housing?

Housing width is the only difference I am aware of. The actual guts of the differential should be the same. 99 - up trucks use a 8.6" ring gear and the carrier requires different bearings than the 8.5" ring gear used prior to the "NBS" GMT800 trucks. In other words, you could use the parts from a 99 - up in your OBS, but you would need different carrier bearings.

You didn't mention what you have a for a truck, but I thought I'd put it out there.

Oh yeah, and 1988 OBS trucks were 28 spline, not 30 spline, so those really won't interchange with much unless you swap axles.

Crap. Totally forgot to mention what we are dealing with here.

    My truck is a 1990 K1500 4wd. The 2wd differential is from a 1991 1/2 ton.

Awesome. This will be the easiest (cheapest) solution till I can park the truck and rebuild both axles properly. Thanks guys!
