Hi i have a 1995 gmc 2500 6.5 turbo the 4x4 isnt working, and the 4x4 light on the floor isnt lighting up. i tested power to the lght blue wire and it is hot when 4x4 is engaged, I then took out the actuator and it is working but i still dont have 4x4. I'm hoping this is something easy and not the front differential. Also 4x4 bulb is good. Can anyone help?

    thanks
    dan

drive around the block a few times an stop....shift 4x4 in to 4high...and drop gear selector into 1 st gear...you should feel the 4x4 engage...do this to 4low also....if if does not engage...check fluid level...

I just gave it a try and it still isnt working. I can feel it go into 4wlow so the transfer case is working but the diff isnt engaging. I didnt check the fluid yet becuase it is snowing... So tomorrow I will check the fluid. Do you think the fuild level would provent the front diff from engaging?

How do i test the front differential manually? i read i have to jack up the front end, take out the actuator and push the fork or colar and spin one wheel. In 2wd what will the other other wheel do, and in 4wd what should the other wheel do?

Look to see if your passenger side axle is pulled out of the housing a bit, and if it moves in and out of the housing easily. If it does, then the snap ring has come off of the stub shaft and let the washer fall down. I've seen this many times. Try removing the actuator, and pushing the plunger with something. If it won't push in, then that is the problem.

How much should the plunger move?

Check your front drive shaft, and make sure your splines for the axle are not stripped out. Happened to my buddies 94 K1500.

Is there a way to check the splines without taking the axles out?

while pushing on the plunger, turn the front drive shaft and see if the wheels turn. My bet is still on the snap ring coming off. I've seen it so many times. The plunger should move a fair amount, and feel like you are compressing a spring when you push it. If it is pretty much solid, the the shim fell down.
