My friend has a 1999 chevy tahoe. Vortec 5.7. The issue will not start. Here is what we have done:

Checked Fuel Pressure: 63lbs cranking, will not start cannot measure it running.
    Checked Battery: New battery
Checked Gas: Gas is in tank, lol.
    Fuel Filter: Brand New
Fuel Injector: checked with "Noids" all lit up.
    Spark: yes

I noticed truck will "backfire" like it wants to start.

    Am I forgetting anything?

No Nothing. It was running in tip top shape! He parked it one night, came out the next morning to go to work, would not start.

That is what mine did when the fuel pump died. There are a couple other things to check. I forget what they are (it has been a while).

    Assuming there is a spark...

will it start with starting fluid? if it does, its not getting fuel.

I have had this happen and it acted like it flooded. would not start with starting fluid either. let it sit with the key off and the accelerator wedged to the floor for an hour and it would start then.

Any fix to this? My dads 3/4ton suburban has been doing the same thing. One day it will start, the next it acts like their is no fuel. Had it towed to the mechanic and it worked fine, they kept it all day and worked fine. We had the fuel pump replaced and it still is doing the same thing again.

Same thing with my 1999 Tahoe, had to have it towed, the next day, it started right up for the mechanic, no spark, no start even with starting fluid. He recommends a new coil...

Update: It has fuel to the cylinders, spark plugs are wet. Ruled out fuel problem.

It is has a orange dull spark. The timing is not correct, engine backfires.
Would a bad crank sensor or camshaft sensor cause mistimed spark?

The theft light is not flashing.

It sounds to me like a bad ground wire on that comes off the fuel pump. Mine acted up a couple times I had to re-tap a screw into some metal for the ground wire as the old one was corroded.

Check distributor cap and rotor for corrosion or wear, it sounds like it might be crossfiring, causing the weak spark and backfiring

Update: He has changed the camshaft sensor and the dizzy and cap. Still nothing......We will check the ohms today on the crankshaft sensor. If not just replace it. I will get an update soon. BTW spark plugs were replaced too.

I've seen bad ignition switches do this. The switch would cause the truck to go into anti theft mode. The Snap-on scanner didn't catch it either
