I'm trying to replace my upper and lower ball joints.

First problem is I cant get the upper ball joint removed. I read online that I need to remove rivets, but I dont see any. Here is a pic

I'm using a ball joint press and I turned as far I felt I could without knocking the truck off the jack stands.

So I moved on to the second problem. My lower ball joint does not look anything like the factory lower ball joint. See Image

Please help with these two problems.

    Thanks
    Nick

I had to remove the upper control arm to gain better leverage on my other truck. I put the ball joint press in a vise. your using a big ball joint press, I hope. its pressed in from the top. to remove you press from below. when reinstalling the new ball joints insure they are indexed properly.

This is the image I used for setting up the ball joint press. I believe I'm trying to push it out the top.

I broke the autozone rental tool trying that direction. Is there some rivet or bolt I need to release first?

    Thanks

I bent the ball joint press from harbor freight(like the autozone one) getting the lower ball joints in.

If you have a torch try some heat on it. You can buy the complete upper control arm with pressed in ball joint already, however its expensive.

I'm going to try some pb then some heat.. if that doesnt work then I'm just going to buy lift kit. I'm not going to buy factory control arms.

Re: pics of ball joint, 2002 gmc sierra 5.3 problems

When I did mine on my '03 I loosend the upper A arm and turned the tool upside down from that pic so it would screw up onto the BJ. I actually had to cut a little bit off it(BJ) and use the bottom of the cup (solid) part on the screw and impact it out.

I dont know if '02 is different than my '03 or if you have a 4WD but I know that the lowers on mine were riveted in and I had to chisel the tops off and drill out more than half to get the rest out, so the new ones on my truck bolted in.

Replacement A arms should be available at other places than the dealer.

I got the upper ball joint out, now the spindle is not releasing from the lower ball joint.

I bought one of those fork tools, but it does seem like its doing the job. I'm hitting it with a 5lb sledge hammer. Any ideas? I've sprayed it with PB a few times.

were the ball joint goes through the knuckle take that 5 lb sledge at hit the knuckle at ball joint a few times and it should pop loose fairly easy

I finally got it loose using an air punch and the fork, then a couple of wacks with the 5lb sledge. I'm just glad to get my truck back together.
