I just bought this truck and the service engine light came on so I went to advanced auto to scan for codes. First time it came up that banks one and two were to rich. I cleared them to see if they would come back and they did. This time it said bank 2 only. Also I have problems starting at times. First time hard to start, if I start up with in 5 min. its fine but after that I have to try a few times to start. Runs great after it has started. It has had a fuel pump put on not to long ago before I got it. I also put new plugs, wires, cap and rotor to try help things out. No such luck. Any help would be great. Thank you

Check your injectors for your starting problem, they are known to go bad. Look for a set of ls1 injectors, direct swap no tune needed for it.

Well based on what you have given for info. Its most likely a fuel pressure regulator that has gone bad. They are very well known for it. The injectors are almost inevitably going to leak as well. If you read the 96-00 vortec owners forum you will find all the info you need. Most are replacing the injectors at the same time as the fuel pressure regulator. I did this same thing as well. I went with a set of 98-00 LS1 injectors. Alot of guys are using the ford motorsport injectors. The upper plenum has to come off to get to the injectors and having the plenum off makes the regulator easy ro get to as well. Once the injector issue is solved as well as the regulator your big block will be pretty much trouble free. The injectors in case you are curious are just a bad design. Hope that helps.

I was under the truck and found an O2 sensor with 3 of 4 wires in half. So I took it out and spliced them back together. I saw that there was one on each side. Is there only 2. One person at advanced auto said 2 and another said 4. I also read that I could be losing fuel pressure. Either fuel pressure regulator or injectors. Any thoughts?

There are 4 oxygen sensors. two before the catalytic converters and 2 after.

Forgot to mention the service engine light was on when I started to work on it and after I found the wires on the O2 sensor I started the truck and light was gone. After about 20 miles it came back on and that is when it told me the above stuff

So was it rich before you noticed the wires cut or no? When you are working on it are you disconnecting your battery?

the guy at advanced auto said when he checked the codes the first time that it was the O2 sensors. I didn't get to see the scanner myself that time so I don't know what it said for sure. The other times I did it myself. When I found the cut wires I was working on the front end and I did not disconnect the battery. When I did cap and rotor and plugs I did not either. Would that be a good habit to get into when ever I work on a vehicle?

My 2000 K2500 only has pre cat O2 sensors. Never had any others. My 96 C3500 has pre and post cat O2 sensors. When replacing the fuel pressure regulator, be sure to change out the little piece of vaccum line that hooks to it. I didn't when I changed mine, and chased a stumble on acceleration for months, until I changed out the line. All over a 2 inch piece of 5/32 vaccum line.

I put a fuel pressure gauge on today to check things and it had no pressure at first then when I turned the key it went to 38 psi, then it was hard to start and when it did it went to 58 psi. It ran rough at first then smoothed out. Turned truck off to watch gauge and in a 30 min. period it went from 58 to 14 psi. Started it up and another hard start and a little smoke did come out. My thought are that it would be injectors and or regulator. Does that sound about right?

Sounds right. The injectors are most likely leaking and the regulator is probably bad as well. They are known to be defective.

what is the difference between the regular injectors for that truck that you would get from a parts store and the LS1 injectors. would you go with GM injectors or ones you can get from a parts store? One place tried to sell me reman injectors for less than half the price. Any luck with those?

    Re: 2000 GMC 3500 with 454

Well there are a huge difference in design. An improved design to say the least. The spray pattern for the injector is more efficient as well. The orginally designed injectors are flawed and none for leaking. Buying new ones might help for a short time. Alot of guys on this forum are going with the ford motorsport injectors as stated earlier and more and more including myself are going to the LS1 injector. There flow rates are very close to the stock injectors if not just a tad more. But there also an improved design.
