How to ID 90-91 K2500 5spd trans from parts truck

I found a parts truck local with a whole 5spd setup I am thinking about swapping in my 94 K1500. The guy said he thought it was a 90 or 91, it's an 8-lug 3/4 ton, and it has a 454. What would the trans be? I've researched the NV3500 seems to be a good swap candidate and a NV4500 would be great for towing, but not so much for bangin gears around town. I know the 4500 is cast iron and the 3500 is aluminum, so that will be easy to spot, but are there any other transmissions it could be that I should be aware of? I was thinking a 3/4 ton trans should be good for my 1/2 ton, as the biggest thing I'd be hauling is my Camaro on a trailer.

The 14-bolt rear would be nice too, but I'd need to convert to 6-lug to fit my new wheels.

He also says the 454 runs good and I was thinking about grabbing that as a spare just in case I ever have issues with the 350 in my 94.

I can get it fairly cheap, but if the trans is not a good swap candidate I'd rather not waste my time.

Well it WOULD have an NV4500 trans but if it's a 90 or 91 the NV4500 wasn't even an option then....92 was first year of NV4500.

If it's a 90 or 91 3/4 ton with a Stick...it's an SM465 4 speed with granny low 1st.....NO chance of the NV3500 being in that truck at all. Impossible...

You really need to find out what year it is and see the shifter stick/knob.

Ok, he wasn't sure on the year. I will find out. So if it's an SM465, is this a good trans? I will do some research and see what I can come up with, but any input is appreciated.

SM465 is a very strong transmission, but "good" is relative - it has no overdrive, and the low gear is near useless on the street, so it's like driving an old 3 speed. Some off-road guys love them...

    Oh...well he said the trans was a 5spd so maybe it's a 92. I'll have to take a look.

It probably is a 92 then. In that case, good trans. 92-94 are specific (MT8 rpo), they have a little lower 1st gear but they have a big jump between 2-3 than the later NV4500's (95+) (MW3 rpo). It doesn't make that big of a diff. though, if you can get a good deal on the whole swap. do it.

I checked with the owner again and he looked and it is a 1990, but he is pretty adamant this it is a 5spd... I can check the VIN for RPOs, but I'm guessing it would have to be a swap if it really is a 5spd.
