i'm doing some truck shopping, and have some concerns buying a truck with the 5.3 vs the 5.7.i've never had any experience with the 5.3, so i don't know what to expect. i'm looking for a decent 4wd extended cab that will be a daily driver, but will also have to do some work. i plan on towing the following:trailer w/2-4 snowmobiles or atv's,car trailer 18'-20',camper (probably in the 28'-30' range), and a 16' fishing boat.is the 5.3 as dependable as the 5.7,does it compare in power, and better or worse as far as bolt on power adders?

5.3 is a great motor, will do most of what you want it to. And as far as bolt ons go you can do as much as your heart desires to that motor.

motors are like air pumps the 5.3 will flow more air so it will make more power and the 5.3 is 50 years more advanced than the 5.7

i would go with the 5.3,

i have a 2500 series obs with the 5.7, it has only 255 hp and 330 lbs of torque and a 3.73 differential.

on long hills pulling the travel trailer (24 ft) it will have to shift down to second and scream to get the load to the top.

be sure to at least get the 3.73 differential or 4.10
    towing you need torque,

they put those 3.42 gears in the trucks to get the mpg up and thats good for daily driving but can be a killer when towing up long hills. do not want to get yourself in a position where you are having to watch the coolant temp gauge all the time.

wow...learn something new every day. With towing involved, I expected most to be on the 5.7 bandwagon

5.3 imo. The 5.7 was retired for a reason. Hard to beat technology.

for towing purposes? I've always read the tbi motors 88-95 were for torque and the ls motors were more toward high-revving top-end with the vortec 96-99's in the middle.

Your comment for all-out performance is most definitely true I would say but I thought otherwise for towing.

BTW: what's with all Canadians on here lately..like the past week? No offense at all but seems like every post have a ****-ton of you guys on it. Is the winter already bad enough to keep you home and you just browse FSC? That's what I'm guessing anyway.

the 5.3 is a awesome motor. I do not have one single regret switching from the 350 to the 323. Dyno test on a new crate motor put into my old 91, the 5.7 put out 210 hp, whereas my 03 5.3 with 120,000 miles on it put out 285 hp. Technology has advanced so far since the 50's when the first 350 was built.

They say the bolt on's are really easy to buy but i've looked and looked and it seems the best two things out there for the 5.3's are LT headers and a smaller pulley for the front serp. belt. I have yet to find a decent mod that will unleash more power without tearing into the motor.

Used to own a FSC, now I just have my extremely old Buick.

Re: gm 5.3 vs 5.7-which do you think is the better motor to stick with?

i DD my 5.3 & it's been awesome. more power & more fuel efficient than the 94 TBI i was driving while i was working on this truck. it's just a great motor. i don't pull on a regular basis, but a couple months ago, i had 1000lb in the bed while pulling a 4500lb car trailer. 8 hrs & not one hiccup. and, if you want, you can get an LS1 to drop in it. you'll get your 5.7 & it'll be worlds better than the small block.

as for easy mods, get yourself some LT headers, a less restrictive intake (whether it be a drop-in with a hole in the factory box or a full-on cold kit) & a good tune. you won't regret it

also, i was about to put a TVS1900 on my truck before i decided to get the vette instead (which is getting a TVS2300), and it's a relatively easy FI system to install. swap intakes, beef up the fuel system, & get a good tune. that's the basic gist of it.

of course, you'll see better results with ported heads, a cam, and headers, but that's all just extra (but recommended)

    Pretty much

Thinking about it, we may simply drive more trucks per capita. Winter comes, and 4x4 becomes an invaluable asset. That, or maybe we're just awesome.
