Gmt 400. Basically im just learning stuff here lately. I have way too much time and too little money on my hands. But id like to know if i could take 10b axles and put in a 14b rear. I know the 4wd ones are about 3 inch longer but would this work if i did it to a 2500ld 2wd? I enjoy the 15 inch rims on the older Chevy/Gmc's and was just wondering if this would be a way to beef up a rear and run the 454 ss rims. I know the 454 ss's had 14 bolts with the 5x5.5 lug pattern so what makes them different than the other 2wd 14b's other than lug pattern? Do they make aftermarket 14b 5 lug axles?

No the axle shafts themselves will not interchange due to size difference. You will need to do a complete housing swap. You can custom order axles from Moser or Strange in any configuration.

How many splines did the 14b's have then and does anyone know the axle length?

Re: 10 bolt axle to 14 bolt rear?

The 454SS rims are the same 15x 7" rims that are on the Sierra GT and any other GM/Chev truck that is optioned with the chome steel rims. They all have the same 5 x 5" bolt pattern and hub size that has been used from 1998-1999 on the GMT400 2wd truck/vans/SUV's. The older (OOBS) trucks use the same 5 x 5" bolt pattern, but the hub is SLIGHTLY smaller. I use the older steel ralleye's off my old 1984 Sierra on my 1997 Sierra, and the lugs match up perfectly, but the hubs fits really tight. The tighten up fine, but are sometimes a bugger to get back off the truck.
The cool thing about those OOBS steel painted ralleye rims is that theya re available in a 15x7" and a 15x 8" rim. The 15x8"'s fit a 275/60/15 tire much better than a 15x7" rim does. People think that the chrome steel rims off the 454SS trucks are 15x8 as well, but they are not. The measure 8" across if you use a measuring tape across the full width of the rim, but if you use a rim width caliper that reaches inside the lip which is across from teh bead mounting surface, you will find that they are actually 15x7" rims. There are literally millions of these 15x7" GMC/Chev 2wd 5x5" chromed steel rims out there. They are a VERY attrcative rim IMO, and I owuld love to get a set widened out to 15x10", or 15x 11" on a 6 1/4" backspace to tuck some 325/50/15 BFG DR's.

Re: 10 bolt axle to 14 bolt rear?

As mentioned, you will need to take out the 10 bolt 8.5" semifloat rear with 28/30 spline axles(depending on year), and drop in a 14 bolt 9.5" semifloat rear with 33 spline axles.
You can use your 8.5" yoke on the 9.5" rear to retain the smaller u-joints, or you can use a conversion u-joint. You will need larger u bolts to attach the 9.5 axle housing to your leaf springs.

No, there arent aftermarket 9.5" SF axles available. They will cut and respline factory 9.5"SF axles, but they cant/wont build an aftermarket replacement. The goldmone would be to find a trailer full of stock 454SS rear axle shafts with the 33 splines and 5x5" bolt pattern. These stock GM axle shafts have long been discontinued. If they were available, one could grab a 2wd 6 lug rear axle assembly and simply swap out the 6 lug axle shafts for the 454SS 5x5" axle shafts.
One could always grab a 6 lug 9.5" SF rear and get the 6 lugs reconfigured into the 5x5" pattern.
Or find a stock 9,5"SF 454SS rear axle assembly. 1990 will have the 3.73's as the 90SS ran the 3l80(thm400) 3 speed auto, and the 1991-1993 SS axle will have 4.10:1 rear gears as they ran the 4l80e with it's 0.75:1 OD ratio.

So no one sells a GMT 400 454ss axle anymore? How would i have the lugs reconfigured to 5 instead of 6?
