Is there some reason you are considering changing coils, driveability or ?, or are you just looking for a reason to spend money?

If its not broke leave it alone. I have a 2000 5.3l with 270000 mi and still has the same coils, injectors and engine has never been opened up.

Spark plugs are items needing replacement, coils should be good till they die and are not a item that requires replacement on a time or mileage schedule.

Speaking of changing spark plugs on a 5.3, how the hell do you take the boots/wires off the plugs??? No matter how hard i pull or twist on the stupid a$$ things, i cant get them off.

Are you putting new wires on? On my Trans Am I sprayed a little WD-40, let it soak a little and it came right off.

My WS6s were stuck on there. I did the WD-40, but put new wires on. Not sure if the WD-40 will hurt them or not.
Lot more room to get them off in the truck. Good luck!

when replacing the plug boots, put a lite coating of dielectric grease inside the plug and coil boots and they will go on and off a hole lot easer next time they need to be pulled off..

Not to thread jack, but what about plug wires? If they are in good working order but have some miles on them, is it worth it to replace them for maintenance sake?

Back to the subject of the thread, I agree that if the stock coils are still getting the job done, leave them be. There has been no evidence to support that spending more money on MSD's or other ignition manufacturer's aftermarket coils will do a better job than the stock coils.

Plugs should be good for a 100k miles so I'd replace the plugs and wires at the same time. JMO

If you had coil issues the PCM would set a code for mis fires. If you do not have any thats not the problem.
