Hi guys, new guy here. I've been luring for awhile and finally joined.

When I'm in 4 hi or auto 4 wheel drive every once in awhile my truck will start whining like its in 4 low. It doesn't make a difference if the wheels are straight or turned. I stop, put the truck back in 2 wheel drive and its fine. When I put it back in 4 wheel it might be one minute or ten minutes until the noise comes back. The differential fluids were changed 10,000 miles ago. This just started happening in the last week. Any ideas?

    Thanks, Trav

It could be quite a few things, from something simple like half shaft u-joints to worn spider gears or pinion or carrier bearings. Does it do it in "Auto 4x4"? If not, you can pretty much eliminate it being in the transfer case, and I would think the spider gears and carrier bearings as well.

Check for slop in your pinion, check fluid level. Might be worth even changing your fluid and seeing if you find anything in the old stuff. Good luck

Any more opinions before I bring it to the shop?

There is really not too much to the system. If it's a bad u-joint, that is simple enough. If its a bad pinion bearing, the shop may be able to tell without pulling apart the ifs. The list of things it could most likely be (and will require the ifs to be opened to determine) is: spider gears, ring and pinion, carrier bearings. There is a very remote chance it could be the needle bearings-but being that they spin even when in 2wd, I doubt that would be it. Same with hub bearings-very remote chance but a possibility. Hopefully the shop you are bringing it to is honest and familiar with diffs. The repair, if internal, could get pricey, mostly due to labor.

keep in mind that *usually* a whine is gear related, and growling is bearing related. drive your truck around to get it to temp, then check the fluid in the transfer case, and in your front differential. look for silver metal flakes/specs which are going to be pretty indicative of worn gears.
