454 vortec hard starting all the time...

    my buddy has a 454 vortec in his truck and to start it you crank it any where 5-10 seconds everytime warm or cold b4 it'll start, once it is started it runs like new but starting is hard, it's not weak battery it cranks like it should(nice strong and fast crankin)...what could his problem be? doesn't burn oil, runs good once started we r stumped

    I would start with a fuel pressure check and leak down test. Sounds like the pump might be leaking down.

    injectors, Dad's did that for 2-3 years before he finally replaced them, starts right up now

    Used to own a FSC, now I just have my extremely old Buick.

    ya after i posted this i searched and found alot about it and easy upgrades, im guessing this is the problem since most people have this problem...any other ideas are welcome thanks for quick replys!

    My guess is FPR. A failed fuel pressure regulator can cause long cranking times. When was the last time you changed the fuel filter? If the injectors are bad enough you can often see them dripping if you look at them when the engine is running, that's a dead give away. The mist should be fine, uniform, and not dripping.
