I have a 93 suburban with true dual exhaust with no cats and 40 series flowmasters. I get a really bad gas smell when I rev my truck up while sitting still and sometimes I smell it at other times, but really bad while revving it. Could this be just because I don't have any cats on there? i am getting no codes at all. It has a new engine, it did this with the old engine as well. I think it has the original o2 sensor also.

Does it do this when it's warmed up? After the O2 sensors are with-in a normal temp range and go "closed loop" it shouldn't run rich.

are you sure it's coming from the exhaust and not from the charcol canister? I had something similar years back.

a bad CTS can dump alot of fuel. ohm yours out and compare readings to a new one both while cold. when it happened to me mine ohmed around 5.0 and the new one at the store ohmed about 2.6... fixed my problem. also obd1 was in the 93 and it probably wont store codes so if you get your check engine light to come on leave it running and get it checked.

if the CTS was bad the engine would cutt off after like 10 min as soon as it gets warm, or make it run rich. had that problem on another truck

Unhappy Re: Strong gas smell out exhaust.

Sorry i cant help guys, but I have the same problem. I just put a new 2 1/2" true duel exhaust with no cats and FM 40's on my 88 LB, and it now runs choppy and smells like a gas station. I'm not sure what it gets now but I did get 14 mpg average before. I am wondering if it is running rich? Not sure.. At least it sounds good. Sacrifice.... Any advice?

Primary O2 may not be reaching temp if it is a 1 wire O2.

But when pulling the cats, expect it to smell some.

I've never had a CTS cause the engine to stall out, just run pig rich.

Re: Strong gas smell out exhaust.

There are degrees of how bad a CTS is, usually they go bad gradually. I have in fact had one that was so incredibly bad it would run for a short while then eventually manage to flood the engine because it was dumping so much fuel. When they're reading a false -40F and coolant temp is actually considerably higher (i.e. you're not in the middle of a Minnesota winter) then this is the result. Certainly there are a LOT more marginally bad CTS's out there than outright totally failed ones.
