Can I upgrade my 01 Silverado from 105A to 130A alternator?

    Greetings,

I am looking to upgrade my 01 5.3L Silverado from the K68 105A alternator to the KG8 130A alternator. I would like to know if this is just a simple swap or is there more involved? If so what else do I need to do in order to perform the swap properly?

    thanks

Please, any help is greatly appreciated. My truck is inoperable until I get a new alternator and the guys at GM are not helpful.

Do a search on the forums. I am pretty sure I read before that it is a very easy swap.

thats a great suggestion thanks Neumannzz. I was only considering the 130A because I know that it is an option on my truck year/model so I hoped the swap would be direct with no modifications or changes that need to be made. I do see however that the 145A alternator takes a belt that is 3/4" longer....is this the same for the 130A?
Also, does it really make a difference since the tensioner is on a spring and 3/4" is really not that much longer wouldnt the tensioner make up the difference? Has anyone tried running the 130A or 145A alternator with the shorter belt from the 105A alternator?

I have a shorter belt as an emergency spare, I know it does "fit," but you really have to crank the tensioner hard, so I wouldn't want to run it all the time like that.
I am fairly certain the 105 and 130 are the same belt. I could be wrong tho.

Used to own a FSC, now I just have my extremely old Buick.
Have some perspective please. Thank you.

I put a really nice dual rectifier 200a alt on my burb (big stereo) and love it. Check out alternatorpartsdotcom.

you do want the tensioner as close to middle as possible so its not stressed so belt length is critical. What I would do is take a trip to the junkyard and see whats available. take pictures of your setup for comparison to see if your gonna need an wire adapter or not. you can check part numbers online from a known 130 amp alternator vehicle source.(ie alternator, belt)

Well here are some answers for both of us. check out the link.....has part numbers for the belts depending on the alternator. K68 is 105A and KG8 is 130A.

I have the OE 130amp alt in my 07 Classic. The belt is 3/4" longer than the 105amp.

The shorter belt would not fit on my truck, which was how I found out I have the 130amp alt.

I just wanted to say thanks for the info in this thread. My alternator died yesterday and I went into advanced auto parts and got the upgraded alternator and longer belt and they worked perfectly. Soooo easy!
