Swapped Rack & Pinion And Need To Adjust The Toe In????? Help?

My rack and pinion started leaking, and I needed new inner and outer tie rods so yesterday I went and bought it all and put it in. While I must say, it was pretty easy to do, but my toe in is terrible and I set the outer tie rod to the same length as the stock unit. My tires are slanted in pretty bad and I need to get them back to somewhat square so I can get it to a shop for an alignment. I get the idea of how to push the toe out, but its there any home brew methods of setting the tires square? Or should I just eyeball it good enough to get it to the nearest alignment shop. Its not a daily driver

    Thanks for any help.

the guy i have work on my vehicles said to make the toe in about an 1/8th and that will be good enough to get to shop. i just put a couple strait edges across the hub face when i had the wheels off and took two like measurement the same distance from the hub. thats as good as your going to get without the alignment equipment the shops have

Tape measure and a friend, consistently using the same tread block, the track width of the front of the front tires and then the rear of the front tires.

I measure ~6 times alternating front / rear and keep writing it down to be sure you're consistent. I go for 1/16" to 1/8" toe in on most of mine. I push the rig back at least 10-15 feet then back forward after each adjustment to see where it goes, measure with the vehicle in this "settled" position on the ground.

Just did my suburban yesterday after putting the pittman arm on, it had a gob of toe in and was chewing things up, set it ~1/8, measured at home after a 50 mile drive... still 1/8. Keep measuring and if you keep getting sane numbers, you did it "right" :)

If you're driving STRAIGHT to an alignment shop, get it to have SOME toe from a hair up to 1/4 or even 5/16 and you'll be "ok"

    Thanks Guys!!

I will give these methods a shot this afternoon and see what happens. Both of these solutions seem easier than what I was thinking about doing, which would be to have my bro hold a level on the tire the loosen the tie rod end and knock it out, adjust as neccessary then hope for the best

FWIW: MOOG makes some really nice looking replacement parts. I am positive that once I get it aligned it is going to steer as good as the day I drove it home. Little bit spendy though!
