    Gentlemen,
    I have a 97 k1500 with a grinding/squalling rear end, and a few questions:

    1. what is the difference between the 14 bolt and the 10 bolt?

    2. what models and or years have interchangeable rear ends?

    3. does anyone know where i can find one? (LKQ wants $700, i told them to jump in a friggin lake)

You need a 6 lug 4x4 axle from 88-98. 2wd axles are narrower.
    10bolt is tiny.
14bolt SF is tough for a six lug axle. 14 bolt FF or Corporate 14 bolt is a 1 ton axle, not what you are looking for as it needs custom work for a 6 lug application.

i had a 91 4x4 w/t 1500 chevy and that rear axle 6 bolt would not fit my 97 k1500 4x4 silverado 6 bolt. so if they were both 4x4 1500's why would the rims not interchange? was there two different 6 lug patterns?

No. 6 on 5.5" has been GM's 6 lug patter for a long time.

    1. 10 bolt has 8.5" ring gear, 14 bolt SF has 9.5" ring gear. The 14 bolt SF is much, much beefier than the 10 bolt.

    2. Any 6 lug 14 bolt SF from 88 - 98 4x4 should bolt right in with a conversion u-joint. You'll need a 1310 to 1350 or an S44 to 1350. Parking brake cable should be reusable.

    3. I have found that Craigslist is your best bet. I looked around at salvage yards when I wanted one and they wanted $800 for one in just okay condition. I found a basket case for $150 and rebuilt it. For $1000 total, I had a really nice rear end.

It would be a tough find, but in the late 80's early 90's GM made some bottom of the line work trucks with 6 lug axles and corporate 14 bolt rear ends. I work for a lawn care company, and we have 2 of these "frankentrucks." They are both from 1989, have 3/4 ton suspension with the 14 bolt rears, 6 lug axles and no options whatsoever. Just a heater. One of them even has a 4.3 V6. Again a tough find, but they're out there.

^pretty sure you're talking about just a typical 2500LD. Which would be the 6 lug 14b SF. The "corporate" 14b, like mentioned earlier, is a FF axle.

6 lug 14b SF are a bit more uncommon now thanks to cash for clunkers, but search craigslist. I've found them for a couple hundred bucks
