I know this has been discussed 1000 times but I can't find exactly what I need. I want to put a 4l80e in place of a 4l60e in a 97 K1500 w/305. I know that I have to move the cross member back a bit which is no big deal. I need a stand alone controller of some sort but is it possible that a PCM from a 96/97
K2500LD w/305 and 4l80e would work? I also need a different flex plate and converter. I was going to use the current transfer case from the 4l60e and switch input shafts if that's possible. It's a NP241C with a 6 bolt flange on the transmission end ,which, from what I understand, will bolt up to the 4l80e. Am I missing anything else here? I was going to buy a used transmission and take my chances on it. What years can I use. From what I've studied I can use one from 93-97 from a gas engine with 97 being the strongest of those choices. Could I use a 4l80e from a diesel. If so can I go right from 93 to 2000 or am I cut off at 97 again? Also wondering if I can use the flex plate from the diesel? I was going back and forth between an 4l80e and a NV4500, but have decided that the 80e would likely be easier and pretty reliable. All I know is I don't want a 4l60e again. Thank you for reading and replying.

I'm not saying it happening for sure. First the current 4l60e has to die, then I have to find the parts, and then I have to get them installed, and working properly. I've also considered buying a rusty k2500 or K3500 with a 350 and 4l80e and putting that in there with it's computer. Should be nice and easy that way. No custom ****.
Thi is of course assuming the 4L60e will die and not be able to be revived... For the money it would have cost to rebuild an 80 before installing it I got my 60 rebuilt at 160K miles (not all mine.) What do you use the truck for? If not towing a lot the 60 should be just as good, and there are quite a few on here that can tell you how to make the 60 beefier on rebuild. Just sayin, might be cheaper and easier to get a rebuild.

This truck isn't used for alot of towing but that is part of life for it. Towing ranges from 3500lb empty(10000lb full) fifth wheel to 15000 lb gravity box. I would rather something that can just take the abuse once and a while and not have to worry about it too much.
i would go with a rebuild. Im swapping a 4l80e with a 4l60e. I had my 4l60e rebuilt and put in for $1,400. it was in my work/play truck, it got abused and held up great. And now im going to put it in my 3/4 ton.
I would say get on craigslist and get a used one for the $300 range, if you realy dont use it alot. On top of that you wont have to do all the exstra work for a swap. Trust me anything that can hold up from a 18 year olds abuse, and be used to tow a trailer full of scrap or wood, is impressive. Yeah its not a 4l80, but from my expericance with the 4l60 its a good trans.. Made by GM so you know its going to last=] but i would also agree beefing it up too "tierd farmer"
