What light are you turning off?
Near as I can tell you are adjusting the timing. The crank to cam correlation is fixed by the timing chain, that may or may not be warn. Not adjustable as far as I know. You seem to be twisting the distributor body and adjusting the cam sensor and the timing. Am I way off?

I use an auto xray because I used a friends a few times and found a good deal on one.

http://www.autoxray.com/product_detail.php?pid=94 I paid less than half that for a new one. Works great for me.

I have been looking at this one as it sez it does airbags.

Timing on these needs to be set by using a scan tool to watch cam retard and rotate the distributor to set cam retard to 0+/-2 degrees

My light isn't on and there are no pending codes,i was looking to do the procedure that dave89iroc is talking about the scan tool has to have bi-directional control,i hear that the light can be off and the cam retard can still be out more than 0 +/-2 degrees,i was told that the OTC Genisys series does this a little pricey right know but if it will do everything i would need to do on this truck and on my other cars it might be worth it,i found some Snap-on mt2500's on ebay that are a good option but probably will not work on my newer cars,i bought the torque pro app to watch the ingition timing but i am still waiting for the bluetooth adapter, the laptop based ones i've found don't have bi-directional controll for the 97 but they do for the 98
