Well im starting to pull more then just a car here and there, im starting to pull 2 - 3 horses at a time and possibly gonna be putting a gooseneck in my truck. the question is, how much can the stock hitch handle? the stock ones has handled a **** load but after reading around im kidna concerned. I have towed 1 ton SRW trucks with a equipment hauler and i have towed a 2.5 ton axle truck with the stock hitch and never ever had a issue. So whats the deal? i know alot of people said they are weak but i never had a issue. (knock on wood)

What truck are you talking about kugs? The stock hitch on my 3/4 ton is rated at 7,500k without W/D and 12k with W/D.

    Re: stock hitch ratings.

Half the problem is your saying I want to know the hitch rating for my truck? So what kind of truck do you have? If it's the half ton in your sig and that's what your pulling a 1 ton with, buy a new truck that's actually rated for that weight.
With a W/D the stock hitch will rip apart literally.
This is the ratings of the stock hitch on my 03, 3/4 ton.

    Consider yourself lucky.
My 92's hitch was 500lbs tongue 5000lbs total.
OE hitch on my 07 says 600lbs tongue, 6000lbs total, even though the tow rating is 9600lbs for the truck.

gvwr of 9600lbs includes any people/cargo inside the vehicle also... you can max out the gvwr quick with a group of fat girls in the cab and a 6k trailer maxing out the hitch

That's not GVWR, that's max tow rating. GVWR is only around 7800lbs IIRC. Tongue weight contributes to GVWR, trailer weights contribute to GCWR.

In your example, the truck with a full tank of fuel, and just the driver would be over GVWR with just a 5Klbs trailer, let alone the fat girls... doesn't work that way.

Buy a new hitch, and buy it by weight.

I don't even know what you are asking.

You have a 1500 truck, so buy a hitch for a 1/2ton rated for the weight you need. They make Class V hitches for 1500s, buy one.

    Re: stock hitch ratings.

How about sell the truck you have and buy a 3/4 or 1 ton, then buy a hitch for that.
If your going to pull alot it is well worth the money.
Also just because you have not had problems does not mean it's smart.

And thats how you should tow. You are asking smothing of a truck that it wasnt never meant to do and when **** starts breaking and/or you can stop you might understand why so guys are telling you to get a bigger truck. Like ive said ive done it a pinch and it was for a short distance. A gooseneck was never meant to be i a halfton yes i know it wil fit doesnt make it right.

    Re: stock hitch ratings.

Why don't you forget the SAS and save the money for the truck.
I saved my money so I could buy mine. No reason for me to give you any of my money so you can buy a truck. When your overloaded and hit me, I'll just sue you and buy the next truck so I can step up the to trailer I want.
Like Kugs said there is a reason why people are telling you to buy a hitch. I don't remeber or know if you even said how much weight your pulling. But pulling alot your so much better off with a 3/4 ton.
As it is your asking about the hitch rating and in the same breath saying well I've overloaded it for the past 5 years and haven't had a problem why do I need a new one?
A couple hundered for a hitch bought and installed locally is nothing compared to killing someone and or going to jail because your hitch failed.

    Re: stock hitch ratings.

Don't be a nimby!! Sell that freaking truck or stop towing that much weight. Regardless of what hitch you have your ENTIRE truck is overloaded!!! Stop before you kill yourself or someone else. Don't listen to people that say "oh I towed this and that with a 1500 and it was fine" it's not fine. It's ignorant.
