Can I tow my boat with my 1994 reg cab short bed chevy tbi 350? The boat weighs a little over 7,000 pounds. The trailer has brakes on all four wheels and I would only be towing it about 3.5 miles. Thanks

The boat weighs 7000lbs + trailer which I'd imagine would be over 1000 so you are talking 8500lbs. You're probably rated for around 7000lbs probably a bit less since it is a short wheelbase. So you are over your rating by a fair bit. Personally I wouldn't hesitate to move it around that short of a distance but would be a bit worried about launching and retrieving.

like nick said moving it that far wouldnt be bad, but backing down a boat ramp with it......wouldnt end good IMO. If you do decide to do it anyway make sure you share a video on here.

You also need to make sure your hitch is rated for it.
I can promise you if you still have a factory hitch it's not heavy enough.

The new body style or 2000 and up 1/2 tons had a 5k hitch factory 3/4 and I believe 1 ton also a 7.5k hitch.
I know 3/4 and 1 ton changed in 2010 or 2011 with the 2.5 reciever.
Not sure about 88 to 98 now. Took mine off years ago and put on a new one.

truck should be fine for a short distance, like everybody said check your hitch and if in doubt upgrade. for loading and unloading i would put it in 4 low, easier to maneuver and easier on the trans

    Re: Towing 7,000 pound boat?

I tow a 3,500 pound boat, with gear and fuel it is probably 4,000, and the trailer is about 1,000 with surge brakes on one axle. I've got a 1998 half-ton 5.7l with 3.73 gears and 3/4 ton springs, and I've pulled it over 1,000 miles, mostly on 60mph highways. You sure as heck know the boat is back there and have to give extra time to get up to speed and to slow down, but the truck can handle 5,000 pounds OK.

Like others have said, you're likely going to be well over the rated capacity (potentially almost double the capacity, my Reese hitch is only rated for 5,000) and without any kind of helper springs, your rear is going to be sagging quite a bit, but my guess is the truck can do it. One thing to consider is if you get in an accident your insurance might not cover it. Then there is the sliding backwards into the water thing. If it is a concrete ramp, free of sand, not too steep, and you have four wheel drive, you might be OK. I wouldn't want to do it often, but the only way you'll know for sure is to give it a shot. Maybe have a buddy with another truck and long tow standing by just in case....
