Hey all. I am downsizing from a cummins to a older truck (economy). Problem is I have a 11200lb fifth wheel camper and from what I've learned is that any 6.0 will not safely pull it. My question is I have found a 04 crew cab 4x4 with the 8.1/allison in it but it has 145000 miles on it. Think thats too much? The truck is really clean and has NEVER had a hitch put in so I think it's never really worked hard. Need some input. Thanks.

Your 2500 GM should be rated for that much 5th wheel weight.

I would not be scared by that many miles at all on a chevy gasser. My work truck is a '96 with 230,000 miles and its had a service body, rack, big compressor and loaded for bear since day 1.

If you're making a vehicle change for economic purpose, you need to look at what fuel is going to cost you on each vehicle. 8.1 is going to be very mean to you at the pump.

Even though diesel fuel costs a little bit more, it will go one hell of a lot farther in a cummins.

Yeah the whole economy thing is throwing me off. The 8.1 is a thirsty motor.

Apples:apples cummins > 8.1L as far as fuel economy and overall performance.

What year cummins are we comparing to an 8.1 w/ 145k miles? 5.9? 6.7? Blu-tec?

    Re: too high miles?

By economy I mean that new family issues dictate that I downsize my huge truck payment. The dodge is a 07 mega cab with 52000 miles that I have quite a bit of equity in. I can trade my dodge in on a older chevy and pay almost nothing. My dodge books for 35000. I can get a 04 gmc 2500hd with a 8.1 for 4000 (with trade). Plus the truck is not a daily driver just a rv puller. I can also get a sweet 80000 mile gmc sierra 1500hd with 4.10s for 6000.00 but I don't think it will pull my camper (11200 lbs).

    Re: too high miles?

if you have hills around any 6.0 is not going to be real happy towing a 11.2 brick. campers are hard to pull wind wise and have to be considered when looking at the towing specs, it may be rated high enough but the 8.1 will be alot happier, seems like a alot better fit if you dont care about mileage.

As long as the price reflects the miles/condition, go for it.

Used to own a FSC, now I just have my extremely old Buick.
Have some perspective please. Thank you.

    Hi
I have a real hard time believing this one.

The 8.1 will tow the camper, but it will get singe digits fuel mileage doing it.

For what it's worth my stock 6.7 cummins auto gets 10 pulling and 15 unloaded at 60mph (hand calc).

Don't worry about that little bit of miles. It's not going to affect anything. 145,000 is nothing

And people need to learn not to believe their digital displays. I could get a friends cummins to get 99mpg once and a while.... as long as we were going down a hill.

    bad math...

Guy at work claims 25 but he cant ever prove it when asked. I dont believe anything over 20 is realistically possible from any of the big diesels.
