I have a 96 k1500 z71. Was wondering what is the max this truck could pull including about 600 pounds in the bed. It has the 5.7l vortec and quto trans. And is has the proper equipment for towing. Air bags in the back to level the load in the bed, towing package, trailer brakes. Am not sure if it has a trans cooler. But i toed some scrap metal to the scrap yard with a little problem. On one kinda big hill i had to put it to the floor so i wouldnt drop speed. I was pulling about 3000 pounds. Does this sound right or can this truck pull more than this? What could cause power lose?

look at your gvwr on the drivers door, it'll say something like 6500 lbs or something, that is how much the truck can weight buy itself including the truck, occupants and the load in the bed. check your hitch rating out for the limiting factor on what you can safely and legally tow.

    Tow rating pends on many variables... Max available for that truck;

    1996 Chevrolet/GMC K1500 Pickup (4WD) 5.7 V-8 7000lbs
    Requires 3.73:1 axle ratio.
    Requires Z82 Trailering Special Package.
    Requires engine-oil cooler.
    Requires transmission-oil cooler.
    Requires weight-distributing hitch.
A higher tow rating is listed for pickups that tow fifth-wheel trailers.
Without those options, factory tow rating will be less.

    So what is you question?

Yes, it is going to struggle at that weight, even half that weight will be noticeable.

So it can tow 7000 but it will be stuggling? And at 2,000 it will not be hardily noticable? I towed 3000 pounds no problem it was in over drive most of the time but when i went up the hill i had it to the floor it wasent losing any speed though.

if your pulling much of a load don't put in overdrive, that's asking for problems.
just because your speed drops on a hill doesn't mean you can't pull it, how much you can pull depends on brakes and suspension much more than power.

Honestly, suspension isn't hard to upgrade, having the right brakes (bigger is better) is a MUST, trailer brakes is a must if your highway driving, even some city driving.

Also, just because the book says it can tow a max of 7k, doesn't mean that you should try to tow that. Also, you keep towing in overdrive, just because its acting fine while towing, doesn't mean you should keep towing in OD, it will wear out your trans faster.

Am not sure if the brakes are upgraded or not. But it has trailer brakes, air bags in the back to lift the back of the truck up when it starts to go down with a load. It has a towing package rated for 5000 and the hitch is to. Also it has a fith wheel that I didn't even know about lol. its covered up by the bed liner. I would say whoever had this truck before me did some heavy towing.

Which most likely means the trans is either almost on its last towing trip or the trans was rebuilt. That my opinion. Not saying you should stop towing, just don't push the towing limit.

You don't need a truck that can pull what you tow 80mph uphill and not break a sweat to tow something. expect to slow down when going up hills, leave it in 3rd (D) as opposed to OD and you'll be fine up to 5000lbs, if you want to go higher than that get a heavier hitch, if you want to go over 7000lbs get a bigger truck.

Only as strong as your weakest link, your max towing is now 5000lbs. Pretty standard for all Class III hitches.
