    5.3L Horsepower and Torque ratings

I have a 99 Sierra 2WD,reg. cab w/ 5.3L automatic. I am curious about what modifications changed the H.P. and torque ratings for the newer 5.3L trucks.
    1999 - 265/320
    2000-2002 - 285/325
    2003 - 290/330
    2004 - 295/330

These are the ratings from my "How to Biuld High-Performance Chevy LS1/LS6 V-8s" book.

    290 HP for 03 5.3L?

    I thought 2002-03 5.3L have 285 HP / 330 TQ?

OK, but what changes were made by GM to increase the power over the years?

I believe the change from 99-00 was the cam. The rest of it is tuning differences.

Re: 5.3L Horsepower and Torque ratings

It had something to do with the tuning as well. GM supposedly received a lot of complaints about the power ratings with the 99 5.3L's so that added to the change for 2000.

EDIT: Also another reason why people with 99's upgrade to the newer style PCM.

If it is mostly the tuning does this mean an after market programmer like Hypertech would make more power on a 99 because they replace the factory tune with theres anyway?

Yeah a PP would make more power...but a tuned PCM is going to smoke that PP on performance :read:

Re: 5.3L Horsepower and Torque ratings

I was meaning wouldn't a programmer make more power on a 99 than it would on a 2000 up. Some people change to a newer PCM and use a programmer on it but wouldn't it be the same as using a programmer on the original PCM since the programmer replaces the factory tune with its performance tune meaning the factory tune would not be playing a role.

Re: 5.3L Horsepower and Torque ratings

I'm not sure. I do know however a programmer isn't anything compared to a tune PCM. Especially on the 99 models that have a chitty PCM compared to the rest. The programmer does replace it with it's on tune but I don't see how it could give more performance then the newer style since the newer styles are so more efficient and have more power from the factory anyway. I wouldn't recommend going with a programmer esp. on the 99's. Upgrade to the newer PCM by getting a new one tuned and you'll really have something to look forward to.

Very old thread but I am curious.
    What is different?
Both my trucks, 99-03 tuned,my 03 will flat out hall.
    Only difference is the gearing, 99 3.42. 03 3.73

Well, the gears help the 03 a little & if you noticed above the 5.3's got a cam upgrade from 00+.

Your tune could have pulled more power from the 03 with a different cam than the 99 with it's cam.

Re: 5.3L Horsepower and Torque ratings

Pretty sure that the 5.3 in 99 was 270hp/315 lb/ft torque. There was a huge outcry from truck owners about Going from 255hp-330 lb/ft. Guys towing were crying that it took some much pedal to get their trucks/trailers moving from a stop, esp. guys that were dragging boats up boat launches.

1999 had the smaller 19 lb/hr injectors and were plagued with PCM O/S's that pulled large amounts of timing due to false knock
2000 was a split year between the manual trans trucks and the automatic transmission trucks
2001 all got the newer larger injectors and PCM (12200411)

As stated tehre was a cam change in there as well.

    Cool make sense.
I have a ls6 cam i got free, guess I just will swap out the 5.3 cam and do some 4.10 and a BU-51 torque converter.
12200411 swap, is it a plug and play swap?
    I have a 411 ecm.

the older the truck gets, the less power it has, that's why the older ones have less :looking:

Have some perspective please. Thank you.

what's the stall gonna be? I hope it's high because an LS6 cam will kill all low end power
