definitely go for the computer tune, Ive heard that a tune really wakes the 454 up for those years. As mentioned, some headers and your choice of muffler will help it breath alot better as well.

Get an X pipe if you don't have one. Lots of people around here get their computers reprogramed at Westers garage or Nelson Performance. Try these links.

so are the doug thorley long tube or what? i called hooker about long tube headers but they do not make any for my pickup because of the fact that it is a 5 speed and not auto....but they do make a shorty header. which would be a better choice long tube or shorty ? what do you think about superchips??? i Dont have the money or the ability to get a custom tuned PCM because of the fact my father particular of what i do to it.

Don't get shorty's. I'm firm on my stance with a custom tune. Maybe someone else can chime in on the programmers. Look at Banks Torque Tube manifolds.

Get a PCm tune for sure. the PE mode delay timer is set at 60 seconds in teh Vortec 454. That means the PCm doesnt go into Power Enrichment mode until 60 seconds have elapsed with teh thjrottle wide open. So the PCM pretty much NEVER reaches PE mode.
For best results, this timer should be set to 1 or zero seconds.

the Vortec 454 is severley detuned from teh factory.

    Torque Management disabled 100%
PE delay timer set to Zero or 1 second.
tune for whatever octane you wish to use.
Get your rear/aftercat O2 sensors disabled via the tune, so teh tune eventually pays for itself by nEVER having to rpleace the expensive rear O2 sensors. The sensors are over $100 a piece now.

A PCM tune and longtube headers would wake up a Vortec 454 for sure.

Hooker makes some VERY nice SuperComp longtube headers for the big and smallblock trucks.

I would highly recommnd the banks powerpack if you have the funds to spend on it. It woke my Big Block up considerably.

ok so long tube headers are better....but the hooker customer service said they do not make any to fit if you have a manual tranny. Any other ideas? Which place would be better Wester or Nelson and what kind of prices are we talking about. and the only other thing a banks power pack has is header and higher ratio rocker arms i think maybe 1.8, right?

I know that, I wasn't referring to you.. bankspowered98 said that the banks powerpack woke his big block up, but banks doesn't make kits for 98 454's, only the 6.5 diesel for that year, which is why I asked him about the diesel.

I asked Jesse about the PE Mode timer, he said it is delayed, but not over 3600 rpm. Anything over 3600 it is immediate.

I hope to have my tuned PCM this week....

Ahh I see, I was looking under the truck section, not the motorhome section..

FWIW, The banks setup doesn't seem like anything special for the gas setups. Intake, headers, muffler and some exhaust tubeing is over $2100?
