My timing was once a few degrees back and I did not know. I got it timed to 0 degrees and what a difference in power. It could now spin the tires with ease. I have not tried advancing it though. I have heard that the truck will feel better with advancing the timing a bit.

Has your fuel mileage changed since you advanced it?

You need a timing light and you need to loosen up the distributor so that you can turn it to the desired degree. You also need to disconnect a wire that is either behind the glovebox or in the engine compartment. Do not mess with it if you dont know. find someone to help you out.

To adjust the base timing you MUST disconnect the above mentioned wire. If you don't then the computer is still in control and will adjust the timing while you are making changes so you really have no clue what it is set at

well nobody could seem to tell me where it is so i never did anything about it and havn't had any problem setting the timming. one person posted a pic and circled the map sensor claiming that that was it. haha. so if you can explain it more clearly then please do so.

What year is you truck by the way? On my 89 the connector is close to the firewall and on my 91 firebird it is close to the A/C dryer. It is just a single wire brown with black strip IIRC I'll get some pics up today for you.

In my buddies 93 it was in the cab behind the glove box. Simply unplug it, time the engine and plug it back in. Took us forever to find the damn thing, thought it was supposed to be in the engine bay but ended up it wasn't.

Its generally on the fat wiring harness near that plastic cover on your firewall.

If you've got the big plastic junction box on the passenger side of the firewall, then the connector will be back there. If not, then it's behind the glove box. Look for a single tan wire with a connector on it. It may or may not be in a loom. Under the hood I believe it is a tan wire with a black stripe, behind the glove box, I believe it's either a purple wire, or the same tan/black as underhood.
