Are you saying this is harmful for the engine (that's why there's an air filter there), or ineffective?

If you're saying it's ineffective, I'd have to disagree with you. In this case, I believe the benefit of the extra volume of air is greater than the drawback of warmer air. Ideally, we'd want a large volume and cool air temperature, but I'd have to agree that in this application, an open element will probably flow better than the factory setup. Even if you remove the airbox from the fender, the inlet to the air cleaner assembly is still a huge restriction...

I wish I could get some dyno #s to back this up, but they wouldn't be able to simulate the airflow as the vehicle is moving...
