We (buddies and I) lowered 5 or 6 trucks without using spring compressors.

Just put the front end on jack stands, then jacked the lower a-arm a tiny amount to remove the stress on the spindle, pulled the spindle off and then slowly lowered the jack. The spring will just fall out.
