But as for that temperature part of it. Its not even worth the hassle. Seems they are always quite a bit off.

Mine is spot-on (according to the news radio stations, who utilize the Phoenix airport temp equipment), and I live in the downtown area.
In Arizona, there's quite the variety of temperature variants (between summer and winter and depending on your region).
In the winter my “ICE” indicator sometimes comes on, but I think it does automagically when the mirror temp sensor reaches 42* or lower (at least that’s what I’ve noticed anyway).
Maybe your temp sensor is bad, dirty or is incorrectly placed.
