I have been reading about sound deadening for about 2 years and finally deceided to tackle my whole interior this week.

And I don't think most people install the asphalt based mat correctly, you have to heat it up to where it becomes very shiny you can see it just barely starting to become liquid then I use a roller to apply it.

There were one or two pieces that I placed crooked on the roof and I could not pull it back off (I weigh about 300 pounds)

I used peel and seal and after I got half the roof done I could tap the done part of the roof then the part not done and could tell a huge difference. I didn't notice any smell.

But the key is heat, buy a good heat gun.
