I'll let you 2wd guys decide...
Before I start, let me say that I am using a friends screen name on this website with his permission.
Here's MY situation: I am about to graduate high school. I love trucks, cars, and dirtbikes (pretty much all motorsports), but I am not heavily into off-roading, even though I hunt and may go off-roading every once in a while.
Here's what I have in mind, and I want you to tell me if you think its a bad idea.
I want to buy a Graystone Metallic Chevy Silverado Ext. Cab 2WD and I want to lift it with the fabtech 7" performance lift and put 35" BGF ATs or MTs on the truck with Mickey Thompson Classic II Wheels.
Here are the reasons for the choices, I like graystone metallic, I want an EXT cab, and I think a 2WD would cost less overall to build up then a 4WD truck that I wont use as such. I'm not an off-roader, but I will occasionally go if a friend has a 4WD truck or something like that for the safety of pulling me out. But I will have a good job this summer so I will be able to buy a nice truck, but not be able to afford a full-blown 4WD truck which they seem to want 10k more for everywhere.
My dad has a 4WD suburban that I could use if I need it, so those basis are covered (plus I have friends who already have 4WD trucks), plus, I will outfit the truck with a warn portable winch setup and I will put a detroit locker in the rear.
What do you guys think about my situation? I have thought it through and short of hunting and the occasional off-roading, I dont see myself needing a 4WD truck.
I also go dirt bike riding, but have only been stuck once in a 2WD truck that had no posi and AT tires. I'm thinkin that MTs and a locker could have helped there a lot and plus, the truck got itself out anyway.
