I can't understand why you guys would have any trouble getting to the screw for the filter(s). On my 2002, its a single screw that holds on a plastic bracket/piece/thing. This is located on the passenger side, under my dash. The single screw is has plenty of distance from my center console (or anything else for that matter) to allow to plenty of access to it. For the most part, it's in the middle of the passenger underdash.

..and yes, my '02 has two filters side-by-side as well.
