There's a fun run you can take from Picacho Peak area to Florence. You can take it by yourself if you are careful. I have used it a few times coming back from Tucson to Queen Creek.There are some area where you can let her run pretty good, but you need to make sure your shocks are up to snuff as the wash board sometimes sneaks up on you and can really beat the crap out of you.
If you want to find alot of the fire roads/USFS roads get a copy of Street Atlas USA. You would be amazed the stuff you can find on there, and Google Earth (free) is also a great way to look for trails. You would be amazed at how well some of the unmarked trails show up on there.
The funny thing is, I just came back from working in the Chicago area, and most of the dirt roads around here are better than the surface streets there.
