I jump in my truck last night to go to school. I check my rear view shortly after and notice the compass is wrong and that there is a 'CAL' lit up down the right side of the compass/temp window.

I check my manual and find nothing. It said that a 'C' means it needs calibrating, but it mentioned nothing about 'CAL'. Anyone else every had this happen?

This I know.

What I'm asking is why my mirror has a 'CAL' showing when there is no referece to such a code.

Thanks for answering, though. I was getting lonely in here.

Joe must be dead.

I just bought a 2005 Z71. I have the same problem....cant get the compass reading or the temperature. I read the book, driven in circles.......and nothing! My display shows an abnormal reading. Anyone have any advise before I go back to the dealer?

I have found that the owner's manual instructions for my inside mirror with trick stuff does not fit what is actually on the mirror. They may have changed mirror models or vendors without telling the people that write the manual. Here is a link about installing and calibrating for a aftermarket mirror that looks like my factory one:

http://www.diynetwork.com/diy/ab_parts_accessories/article/0,2021,DIY_13690_3151474,00.html

Just noticed that the author's tool list includes:
air chuck, tire gauge and valve tool, wire-strippers and wire cutters, air wrench and safety glasses.

WTF? an air wrench to install a mirror?

I would pull the fuse to the mirror and let it sit for a couple minutes. GM electronics have a reputation for hickups (put lightly...), this generally works for me and (most) of my 'electronic problems'. Not the perfect answer, but it may work ~ can't hurt to give it a shot.

Hope this helps you out :)
