View Full Version : Can I Add A Homelink Transmitter To My Truck?

Hi,

My 2002 Silverado has a space in the overhead console for a garage door opener, but I want to try and add a Homelink transmitter. Every day to get into work I have to stop, roll down my window and punch in a code to get through the gate, but I could open it remotely and without stopping if I had a transmitter. Do I have to get one from a GM vehicle or do they make universal units? Finally, is it hard to install? Thanks for the information.

i see em on ebay all the time for around 100-150 brand new. I have had the same thought but being 16 I can't afford to find out the hard way that they don't work. someone help us both out.

whoa 350$ dang. I think I would surf ebay for a few months before I Would pay 350$. jebus thats just too much money. Go check some junkyards locally and see if you can score one.

I'd just hit up the junkyards for a new console. You might luck out and find a yard that has a busted console that has the good homelink setup you could pick up even cheaper. You should be able to switch the panel out, but you'll have to do some wiring. I'd just look for a whole new console and switch it.

The door on the OH Console that holds the Garage Door Opener can be switched out easily with the Homelink set up.
I bought mine from a seller on eBay for about $40.00. It's been so long ago that I can't remember the sellers name.
I just found a seller that was always selling OH Consoles on eBay and clicked on the "Ask Seller a Question" link and asked if he had any. I got lucky and the first seller I asked got back to me with a price for the door.
It works great and only requires a power source and a ground. It can be programmed for 3 seperate Garage Doors or accessories.

If you buy the homelink button from ebay, you still need to figure out how to wire it up yourself. For some people, the complete kit is the best way to go

It's pretty simple...
All you need is power and a ground. And there is a third wire to iluminate the buttons that needs to be connected to your instrument lights.
Most people I talk to don't even bother with the third wire, I hooked it up on mine.

Here's the one i bought.

http://www.corsicas.com/Ebay/BlazerHL.jpg

This auction is for a HomeLink panel from a 1998 Chevy Blazer.
If your truck didn't come with this option, here's your chance to upgrade! Just replace the garage door opener panel, and splice 2 wires!

Will fit/work in the full size overhead consoles of the following 1995 to 2005 vehicles:

Chevy Blazer
Chevy Silverado
Chevy Tahoe
Chevy Suburban
GMC Yukon (Denali)
GMC Sierra
GMC Jimmy
Oldsmobile Bravada
Cadillac Escalade

Mine just plugged in. I removed the orginal overhead consloe and installed the new one. The Homelink is wired with the dome lights. It literally took less than 60 seconds to remove the old one and install the new.

It's a little different than mine, but sounds like all you need is power and ground.

The little round dots on the buttons light up when wired to the instrument panel lights.

Thanks for all the responses. I'll certainly check on ebay. That's a good idea...I'll just try and replace the swing door. My truck already has the overhead console with the garage door opener button.

By the way, Lowdown, what kind of XM unit is that? Mine is the Sky Fi which was too big to fit in my console area. That one looks like it fits just right.

Those of you that wired yours in, could you give me a hand on which wires you used? I just picked one up on Ebay and wired the orange to orange and black to black, but nothing seemed to work, either I got a bad homelink transmitter, or I did the wrong wires. My homelink thing has Orange, Black and White wires, which ones go to which?!? Also I'm putting this in my 1995 4 Door Tahoe, if that matters :D

Does the light on the panel light up when you push a button?

I can't find the information but I went out and dropped mine down and used a test light.

My colors are different than yours.
Here is mine:
Orange: Hot to battery source
Green: Instrument lights
Green with orange stripe: ground

Based on the color of your wires I would bet that
orange = power
black = ground
white = lights

Hope this helps.

Programming instructions:
1. For first-time programming, press and hold the two outside buttons until the indicator light begins to flash (after 20 seconds). Release both buttons.
Note: Some vehicles may require the ignition switch to be turned to the second (or “accessory” ) position during the programming process.

2. Hold the end of your handheld transmitter between 1 and 3 inches away from the HomeLink surface (located on your visor or overhead console) keeping the indicator light in view.

3. Using both hands, simultaneously push the handheld transmitter button and the desired HomeLink button. DO NOT release the buttons until step 4 has been completed.

4. Hold down both buttons until the indicator light on the HomeLink Universal Transceiver flashes, first slowly then rapidly. When the indicator light flashes rapidly, both buttons may be released. (The rapidly flashing light indicates successful programming of the new frequency signal.) To activate the garage door or other programmed device, press and hold the HomeLink button - releasing when the device begins to activate.

5. To program the remaining two buttons, follow steps 2 through 4.

Rolling Code Programming
Rolling code garage door openers which are “code-protected” and manufactured after 1996 may be determined by the following:
• Reference the garage door opener owner's manual for verification.
• The handheld transmitter appears to program the HomeLink Universal Transceiver but does not activate the garage door.
• Press and hold the trained HomeLink button. The garage door opener has the rolling code feature if the indicator light flashes rapidly and then turns solid after 2 seconds.

To train a garage door with the rolling code feature, follow these instructions (the aid of a second person may make the training quicker and easier):

1. Locate the training button on the garage door opener motor head unit. Exact location and color of the button may vary by garage door opener brand. If there is difficulty locating the training button, reference the garage door opener owner's manual or please visit our web site, www.homelink.com.

2. Press the training button on the garage door opener motor head unit (which activates the “training light”). Note: Following step 2, there are 30 seconds in which to initiate step 3.

3. Firmly press and release the programmed HomeLink® button. Press and release the HomeLink button a second time to complete the training process. (Some garage door openers may require you to do this procedure a third time
to complete the training.)

The garage door opener should now recognize the HomeLink Universal Transceiver. The remaining two buttons may now be trained if this has not previously been done. Refer to the Programming portion of this text. The HomeLink Universal Transceiver (once programmed) or the original handheld transmitter may be used to activate the garage door.

In the event that there are still difficulties in programming the HomeLink Universal Transceiver, please visit our web site, www.homelink.com.

I'm sure you already know this, but make sure the power source is hot all the time, not just with the ignition on.

He probably DIDN'T know that

Look out Mauro, I'm "watching" the auction you're the high bidder on. I need one too. I'm tired of having two remotes in my cd slot.

Has anybody got a price from a stealership? or gmpartsdirect.com?

This is what I did cost me about 5-10 bucks but it only works if you have a 9 volt battery in your trasmitter.

Bringing up an old thread.... Joe referred me to this thread (I posted the Homelink question on gm-trucks.colm) for adding Homelink in my 2005. What consoles will fit into a 2005 2500HD (I currently have the 'short' console and want to add Homelink)? I would concider upgrading to a full console if I can find a deal on Ebay.

Curly,
I have been researching this since I got my Tahoe (2004) and thought I would share what I found/did (as opposed to getting a console with homelink). I found bits a pieces off of diff. web sites, but this is the one (http://www.elcovaforums.com/forums/showthread.php?t=8463) that actually shows some pictures. Basically, you take your current transmitter, find which contacts open the door (easy to do), solder a wire to it, buy some momentary switches from Radio Shack, drill a hole in your existing console, and put it all back together (with the transmitter in your console). Took my around a 1/2 hour and it looks just like great. Only down side is I will have to change the battery in the transmitter as some point, but it is one screw and some tugging to bring the console down...less then 2 minutes. If you have any questions or would like a more detailed write up with pictures, let me know.
