Ok, I have seen a pic of an older expedition center console in a tahoe, like this one:
http://i14.ebayimg.com/03/i/03/32/f6/5f_1_b.JPG

but what I am wondering is would the newer expedition console fit better? I like how it has cup holders in the back, I wish I could find one with the rear ac controls on the top of the front of the console so I could flush a dvd player there. like this one(but w/o the ac controls): http://i17.ebayimg.com/02/i/03/2d/62/08_1_b.JPG

the other rear difference in the top of the arm rest is bigger. I lean on those all the time, so bigger is better for me, haha. any ideas?

hmm, looks like the top is allready pretty snug in there, I am thinking the newer one won't fit, anybody try it? have any pics?

i dunno man but you just gave me a new idea for my interior!! That looks nice

Coop
01-15-2005, 04:53 PM
haha, isn't that the way it always works. I know you had a kinda set idea on how your interior was going to be done, and then you see a new pic on the internet and it all gets blown up and started over again, haha. hell, if you find one for a good price at a local yard, I know you said you had some hookups, and they have two of them, let me know! :D

What year did the "new" one start in the expo's? Did they make any in a dark charcoal or black? Seems as if it might fit slightly better if the seats did not have the armrest on them?

I think the newer style started in 2000 or 2001. Yeah, probably would fit better w/o armrests, or just keep the arm rests up maybe. If you took them off though, you would have to get the seats redone because of the holes though.

hmm.... makes me think that maybe I shouldn't have got that obs caddy console off of ebay. I think I'll like the caddy console even though I have to figure a way to put my cd player and a/c panel in it. Anyways my point is I could have probably got that for less than the $250 and that looks good>>> I'd role with the first expedition console.

My seats did not come with armrest because I have the center seat/console. That is what I was thinking. Any better pictures of the expo console as far as how it fits up to the dash?

03 is the new style expedition I belive... Looks good... IF you can hack the idea of it being a FORD.....

plastic is plastic to me. it doesn't have any visible ford logos anyway.

Yeah, I think the new model change year is the '03, but the "newer" console is still in the older style expedition, I guess '00-02

does anyone know if the little cubby hole comes out? i have a 5 speed & that might work pretty good for me.
OR, does anyone have any pics of a custom console made for a 5 speed?

It looks awesome, but I just don't like how it blocks the ashtray (coin holder in my wife's Yukon) and the power outlets. Those are all well-used items in our Yukon.

Cut it out. It looks like it's in about the right spot to work. I've been working on designs off-and-on for a custom console in my truck to work with the 5-speed. I haven't come up with anything I'm super happy with yet.

I'm sure there is a coin holder in the console itself. And you could even put power outlets anywhere in that unit. Just drill a hole.

COOP, - A great search engine for salvage yards is car-parts.com Try this to find the console you want. Be sure they give a 25% discount over counter prices because that's a rule for wrecking yards listing on that site. The price listed should already reflect the discount. Mention where you saw their ad when calling. I explained it in another thread. Do a search on here for that web site if you need to read it.

Where did that pic come from? I'd like to see the interface between the front of the console and the dash. Whoever took that pic conveniently covered up the gap with the steering wheel. Also, it looks as if the console is a little short and ends before the backs of the seats which would be less than ideal. Had me second guessing all the work I put into my custom console but I think I like my result better in the end.

Im supprised no one has seen that pic before. The Exp. console modification has been brought up before. Seems everyone saw those threads. I can remember 2 of them.

First time this was posted someone posted this link. It might help figure out what console to look for.

http://www.geocities.com/scmc75/f150/Console/expy-c-faq.htm

I planned on doing this someday myself. Cheaper than looking for a Caddy or Denali console. And im sure a lot easier too.

And it really doesnt look like it would look right. We just had one in our shop for some maintinence and it will look odd because the front of it curves up to meet the Fords dash. If you see what I mean.

i was figuring that I would trim the front of the console to help meet the dash better. then I was also going to take a piece of ABS and paint it light grey to match the dash and replace the cig lighters and ash tray so it was just a panel in stead of stuff behind the console.

Hey thanks for all the interest in my console!

To answer the original poster, the newer wide-top console does not fit. The top is just too wide.

Yes, it does cover up the tray and power outlets. I relocated my power outlets to the back of the console and mounted them with a custom cut piece of black plastic. The front tray also has coin holders so it is still fully functional.

Obviously the console does not fit perfect. I've taken some new photos at the worst angles possible. It honestly does not look this bad when you are seated.

I don't know who you guys are trying to kid. The fit and finish of the dash and interior in these trucks is horrible. If you're looking to impress someone with a gapless interior, wait for the 2007 SUVs and 2008 trucks.

If you are still not convinced, it would be very easy to create a trim piece from wood and then wrap it in vinyl to fill the gap.

Sorry for the bad lighting, I took the pictures quickly in my garage.

The red/black connectors are a standardized 12v power connector for amateur radio and other equipment.

The circled area is the edge of material I removed with a dremel tool. The left side of the console is very snug against the lower dash.

http://427.org/_photos/console3.jpg
Here you can see the mismatched curve of the console. The black foam comes with the console and it does touch the lower dash at the top and bottom.

http://427.org/_photos/console4.jpg
Here is the gap on the top. As I said earlier this could easily be filled with a wooden trim piece which you could vinyl wrap.

AWSOME! thanks for the pics man! we have been waiting for you to chime in!

question: couldn't you have just slid the console forward about another 2 inches to help with the gap?

charcoalgray99
01-30-2005, 06:35 PM
Since the left side touches the lower dash I dont' see how you could move it any farther forward without serious cutting of the console (including the darker top) or lower dash.

Coop

hmmmm, I now wonder if the newer console would fit, top lid width wise, if you either left the arm rests up all the time or just took them off. hmmm.

that looks nice man....good work! Way better than any chevy console!

Do you think a low mounted floor (automatic)shifter would work in that front hole/storage area?
Or is it too far up to comfortably reach a shifter?

ok guys, damnit, my plans keep changing, grrr. keep seeing pics on the net, lol. check this out:

although this console will be a lot more expensive than an expedition one though. I like how it fits better. but I still like the expedition one, *sigh*, decisions, decisions.........

Cool - Im glad I found this thread - I've got a 00' tahoe (ods) that Ive been killing myself trying to figure out what to do about my stupid factory console - I was concerned of trying to find what the difference of colors would be but as charcoalgrey99 shows - they look damn close. Do you have any noises or rattles out of the ford console and doesnt it just bolt in??
thanks for the cool pics---

Now he has to plug in the back of the console, like he said in this post:

I don't know for sure if the widetop fits when you remove the armrests. I would say if the base is any wider (between the seats) it would not fit. Mine is tight between the seats but it does fit. No noises or rattles, but if you move the power driver seat forward or back there is a slight rubbing.

I don't know what the floor mounted shifters look like... use your best judgement from my pictures.

If there is a difference in shades of gray, I can't tell. It looks like a perfect match.

It doesn't just bolt up. I was able to use the front ford mounting bracket. The rear bracket needed some tweaking. I forget exactly what I did.

Keep in mind this cost about $150. When I did this mod a few years ago there was no supply of spare escalde/denali consoles, and a new one from the factory was $1500 (dealer cost), $2500 retail.

Thats exactly what I was thinking when I saw the ford console. I actually won one on e-bay but she tried to screw me on shipping so I bailed.

Couldn't you just push the console as far forward as possible and then scribe along it at the widest point. Trim it and it should fit perfect. It would still cover the ashtray and outlets but the front profile would then line up perfect. Just a thought.

It's really easy man - after reading this tread I went the next day and found a console out of a 01 expediton for 100 bucks!! It took me about 3 hours to install it and it looks awesome and fits perfect. all you have to do is modifiy the factory ford rear bracket by drilling a couple of additional holes, cutt off a couple of small pieces of plastic and also cut out some notchesout of the bracket to get to the factory chevy bolts and lower bracket - kinda hard to explain. I still have to relocate my power outlets - so when I do I'll get some pics of what I did for everyone - I think you'll like what I did - it looks killer

Is this in your truck? This is exactly what I am working on right now! Is this an actual console or did you fab an extension to the stock console? I am going to be trying to extend an addition to the console. If this is yours...or anyone else here, I'd be interested in how you did it. Looks real nice!
