View Full Version : Child seats in extended cab?

I have a 1991 1500 extended cab and am wondering if anyone has installed child high back boosters in rear seat? The top of the child seat touches the rear window. The shoulder belt exits from quite high and when kids sit in back it crosses in front of their faces. Is there some sort of clip or change I could make to remedy this?

Later model ext cab trucks have a child type of slip on clip for the seat belts.
baby departments at stores carry them as well.
I'd be concerned about the baby seat being up against the glass however...

Yeah, my 97 and my 01 both have little straps that hold the belt down off the kid's neck. Personally, I never liked booster seats, I just ran seats with 5-point harnesses until they were old enough not to sit in a seat. I have high back seats and them being against the back window (which they were) was never a problem.

BTW, unless you are running more than one the car seat needs to be in the middle anyway.

It's now law here that kids need to be in Car/Booster seats 'till they are 9 years old, or 25" tall from the bottom of their butts to the top of their head while sitting. I like 5 point harness car seats, but the weight limits prevent most people from using them till the age 9 / 25" rule.

Where is that strap Donnie. Maybe my '96 does'nt have them. :dunno:Look on the c-pillar just next to or behind the upper corner of the seat. It looks like a little plastic clip on a bungee cord. You really only need it for the bigger kids once they start using a regular seat belt like my 5 year old.

Bill9? That's insane. My 7 year old is more than tall enough to use a regular seat belt. I couldn't imagine putting her in a booster seat!

Not here. I can get one later. It might be on the '97s and up since now that I think about it our '96 Burb doesn't have them either (but later Burbs do).

The thing about the clip is that it is like velcro and attaches to the factory seat. Not sure if it will attach to a seat that it was not designed for. :dunno:

There are plenty of versions at baby stores that you don't need to permenantly fasten to your truck. GM did that so you can't lose it :D

So...Amy is registering fo some baby stuff and she was reading up on seats and different brands. Alot of complants are on certain seat because people say the seats don't fit right/ too tall for some cars/SUV's. She is looking at those 3 way seats, I forget the real name, but they clip off the base and they can be used from newborn to 100 pounder.

SO you guys w/ OBS X-cabs.....what seats like that do you have/recomend?

Thanks.

I never could get use to the seats that had a removable piece. There was something a little more reassuring about having the carrier seat sitting firmly on the seat cushion instead of being clipped into a base. We typically went straight from a "carrier" type (infant rear facing) to a 5-point harness style convertible seat. The nice thing about these is they can be used as a rear facing seat until the child reaches typically 25-30 pounds and then you just turn them around and use them forward facing. Also, get a comfortable seat...preferably one that does a good job of support the kid's head if they fall asleep (and they will). The absolute BEST advice I can give anyone about child seats (other than please use the damn things :teddy: ) is simply learn how install them correctly. Nothing pisses me off worse than to see a seat improperly installed. The best way is to use the simple lap belt in the middle of the rear seat. Also Doug, since your '96 probably doesn't have it, look into a tether anchor. I am pretty sure you can geta retrofit for your truck. Tethers have been proven to work and improve seat safety in the event of a crash or rollover. Amy has a newer Jeep, right? I am willing to bet hers already has tether anchors since Chrysler really paved the way for that stuff.

Also, here is a website that shows how well certain car seats fit in certain cars:

Note: In my previous post I mentioned going straight from a carrier to a 5-point harness seat. We only did that with our last child. With the others we used a seat with a pull down barrier in between those two . Car seats now are vastly better and safer then they were even just a few years ago.

We always used infant/child seats without fail when the kids were in that age range. Now that they are teenages sometimes I want 'em in an ejection seat.

Thanks Donnie...I will look into all those links. I think the main reason for gettin the seat I described is because of one...price and 2 this way our parents can just buy a base and be good to go.

Do you have any pics of the X-cab seats? And how they fit?

Here ya go. This model fits pretty tight in there but there others that fit better (like the one I use in the HD). Of course, my 97 has the 60/40 and that center "console" sits up higher than a truck with buckets. Also, the very top of the seat is touching the glass but not really putting any pressure on it. I have run seats like that in that truck since new in '98 and never had a problem.

Here is the seat I use in the HD. Just as safe as the other but not as "cushy". I typically only use it for around town. If we go on a long trip or something in the HD then I swap the other seat. I prefer having mutliple seats as a matter of convenience. I hate having to jack with moving seats from car to car.

It's been a while since we tried it, but for some reason I want to say that the near-vertical back of the rear seat in the OBS excab interferes with locking the infant carrier into the base.

Also, when you go looking for the first forward facing one, look for one with just a 5-point harness like the brown one Donnie posted instead of one with the swing down cross bar. With the Malibu, it isn't an issue, but when we tried putting our seat in the back of my father-in-law's OBS excab, the back of the front seats interfered with opening and closing the crossbar. May not be an issue with all seats of that design, but it's probably at least worth mentioning.

i never mounted the rear facing in the truck. but forward facing looks pretty much like donnie's. also if you plan on using it in the truck, DON'T get one that had the "arm" that folds down. you release that and if your not careful............ out goes the rear window. the 5 point works great in the middle. but be prepared, the carseat in a ext cab two door is a pain to use LOL. until they can crawl in themselves. i know minivans aren't "cool", but if your by yourself, have to carry the kid and a diaperbag. swing out doors are fun in parking lots........

We do have one of those convertable ones that you asked about in my wife's car, but we don't like it. We bought it for the same reasons you listed. Right now it's rear facing using the center lap belt to anchor it.

In another month when we are able to turn them around, my truck is getting the Simpson seat, and the seat in my truck now is going in the car.

1. The 5 point buckle is cumbersome, the belts get magically twisted in the buckle and it's a 10 minute battle to fix them. It's tough to level the seat while rear facing, especially with the steep angle of the car seat bottom, becasue you can't use the seat base. The instructions say to use rolled up towels to raise the seat to level :wtf:. It might make a return when we can use the base and don't need to use the 5-point harness anymore.

2. Never say never:read: . Three wide with a car seat in a RC is cozy.
