Seat Repair?

The seats (split bench) in my 98 Chevy extended cab are torn next to the levers that recline the seat and flip them forward for access to the rear seat. I would like to repair them as the cloth is in great shape, it is just the vinyl next to the levers that are torn. What are my options? Have them repaired, maybe a section of vinyl or leather sewn over the torn part, or just replace them. If I find some covers on eBay or somewhere how hard are they to change. Do they just slide off the seat, or will they be a pain.

I think you have several options (depending on your pocketbook):

1) Take your truck to an auto re-upholstery shop for a quote. I would take it to several different shops, that way you can pick & choose. Also ask to see some of their work, very important in my book.

2) Check ebay, JCWhitney, etc. for seat covers. Seat covers are fairly simple to install, they just slip over your existing upholstery. A word of warning, some seat covers are very cheep and cheep looking. If you decide to go this rout, make sure you know what you’re getting (don’t settle for the cheapest ones).

3) Replace your seats with a newer bench or buckets & console. Check ebay, you can usually find seats there fairly inexpensive. I bought my 96’ buckets off ebay for about $210., they replaced my old 60/40 bench.
