...this is a 97 silverado. The inside door handle is broke. I have the door panel off and the power windows and locks disconnected. The problem I am having is getting the inner panel off.Can someone direct me on how to do this? Also, how hard is it to replace the handle? Need some instruction on that also. Any help would be greatly appreciated.

thx

The inner panel (I presume you're talking about the black metal panel) does not have to be removed to replace the handle. The handle should slide about 3/4" to the rear, and then out. I replace the inside handle on my 96 recently.

yeah, you don't need to pull the inner panel. Drill out the rivet that holds the handle in place and it comes right out. I have replaced two on the drivers side and one on the other. Check your door pins and bushings. If they are worn, the door will be harder to open causing you to pull on the handle harder than you need to.

thx guys! When I drill out the rivot that holds the handle on, I guess I just replace it with a sheet metal screw?

thx

Yeah, a screw will work or another rivot if you have a gun. I've also had to replace the interior door handle on my '96.

I would be surprised if there is a 96 out there that hasn't had at least one replaced.

Just to make things easier... the new handle fits snuggly enough without the rivet being put back in. I didn't put mine back in and I know a couple other people who did it the same way. It's been like a year and 1/2 since I replaced mine and no worries.
