We were hoping to cut the floor out and maybe mount the old tank in the back but, The tank is not going to fit the way we want it to and I wont be able to have the filler neck come out the tail light like I want it too, So it looks like I'm going to have a custom tank done..

I'll update this as we go!

Thanks again for the help Doc!:cheer:

Well it's official. You think like me.. If I had a 2dr, I'd do whatever it takes to raise the tank.. Have you thought about a fuel cell, or even a custom tank made to fit over the wheel well area on one side. Then you could have the filler out the taillight? how about raising the floor some and have a thinner tank made? Just tossing out some ideas I had.

I just hope my thoughts come out as good as yours!

Fuel cell, Yes Ive thought of it..

Havin one made to fit over the wheel well, No I havent..Sounds good but, What about all the weight on one side? Would that make it lean to that side??? And I'm not sure if there is enough room to put a nice size tank like that! Which leads me to the thinner tank, I really dont want to lose a lot of tank, You know? I dont want to pull over and get gas every 100miles..

We are thinking to cut out the floor and having half the tank so its hanging down below the floor, Just enough so you cant see it by looking at it from behind, Then framing arourd the tank..So basically raising the whole floor in the back 2 or 3ft..

Jump in doc if that doesnt sound right!

That would be cool I think. Maybe then you can put the subs in the new floor. that would be pretty cool.

Anyone know how many gallons this gas tank is post above?

Part of me wants to say 30 gal, but I have never been able to get more than 26/27 in to mine.

damn man that looks so good, thats the the only thing i dont like about the 2 doors with a rollpan

tahoen
02-04-2006, 09:37 AM
I heard it was a 25gal, I just want to make sure I got one that holds about the same..

Yeah, When We put the rollpan on I knew I'd have to do something about the gas tank..

I took some rough messerments yesterday and it looks like 28X16X17/25gal, Will fit nicely..

I called www.kustomtanks.com And told the guy what I was looking for, Gave me a price 750$ for everthing, Thats the tank, sending unit with a high flow pump, Filler neck coming off the upper side, So I should have no problem running it to the taillight. And everything eles I would need to just hook it right up!:head:

I like the deal! I'm going to cut the rest of the floor out and double check the messerments and order this thing on monday..

Should take about 3wks to get done and shippied to me..

no prob man i loved helping. I cant wait to see it running without that nasty tank hanging down. and even thou the wheel well tank sounds good it would be way to small and would make your truck a pain to use as a daily toy in the summer also i dont want to have to stop every hour on our way to carlise lol. no we just need to finish working out the planes for the filler behind the tail light. Thats going to be my fav part of the whole project.

Well, kustomtanks wont be doing the new tank! I really dont know what happened but it went something like this, I called 2wks ago and talked to someone and told them what I was doing and what I wanted..The guy was like cool, No problem! I made a cardboard tank to make sure everything was going to fit and I double check all the measurements..So I do all that and called them yesterday to go over everthing and pay them, The owner answer the phone and I start telling him what I wanted and the guy says he doesnt want to do it, I was like wtf! I told Him I just talk to another guy a few weeks ago and he said no problem. He says I'm the owner and I dont want to do it! He said there is 20 different reasons why he wont do it, One being he doesnt want to be liable for any problems, I was like whatever and hang up..

I talked to a few other places and was not happy with any off them! Then I remember watching trucks last weekend and tracy was talking about ricks hotrod shop, They make stainlesssteel gas tanks.. So I called them up yesterday and talked to hector(rick's father)Great guy, Helped me out alot..Then later that night I talked to rick him self..They sent me a drawing of what I told them I needed and they gave me a price.Needless to say the price is over a 1000$ for everything, I mean everthing!

Its been driving me crazy on what I should do! Do I really want to spend that much on a gas tank that I wont even really see..

And after thinking about it and thinking about it some more, I just said f*ck it and ordered it!

Should take about 4wks to get here..

Here are a few photos of the final opening I cut out of the back..

That was the plan! The tank isnt centered because of the driverside shock mount, So the tank is closer to the passenger side..I plan on running the filler neck behind the passenger side tail light :rocking:

Yeah, I read that post you had going, Great job on the tank btw! Wish I could make one, Would have saved me same $ but, I'm happy with this one..

For them useing the stock sending unit/pump, At first they told me to send them the unit but, I wanted everthing "NEW"..Now, Looking back I might have sent them the stock one to use, Just because I havent hooked everything up yet and I'm worried because I told them to make sure I can just plug it into the plug that ran to the stock tank but, It's not set up to do that! So, I'm a little nervous until I get it going but, I think I got it figured out so we'll see..

good luck ;) hope it runs with no problems!

NOW.... i just want to know how you gonna cover that think? interior wise....
also PERSONALY i would have that tank rhino lined realy thick for a real solid tank!
just rhino line it or something... then paint it to match the truck ;)

either way keep up the good work!

ITS THE LITTLEST THING people dont think about that make all the difference in the end! ;)

tahoen

For covering it, I'm going to just box it in..Weld a frame around it and cover it with some metal..Sounds pretty easy:dunno:

Then cover all that with some plywood carpet, Fit some speakers in the new raised floor and pow!

I'm just worried about getting it running, Then we'll go from there.

P.S. I'm not going to rhino line over this tank!! I want to least see the stainless steel from underneath it..

Donnie, It's really turning out great. I am impressed with your progress... 2 small suggestions. 1. hinge the tail light outward so when some idiot opens your barn door at a show, it wont crush the light. 2. Use a couple layers of dynamat on just the top of the tank. this will minimize the noise of the fuel pump a little better. then enclose it all in and it should be sweet. I can't wait to see it at Carlisle.

You could have sumped that bad boy and then run an inline so it would not be as loud since it is internal. In the end I boubt you will hear it that much with wood carpet and whatever sound deadener or insulation you use.

Damn stock pumps are loud to.

I have two pump on my camaro and they are external but they are even loud. When they start to go south they let you know they are going by getting louder.

Really nice work, my buddy had a 2 door with a pan and the tank just killed the look.

Whoever made that tank did some nice tig work and metal fab it is art in my eyes.

Just a quick comment about your fuel pump noise. Use DYNAMAT sound deadening material (sold at most car audio stores or @ Dynamat.com). It will reduce your interior noise by a few Decibels. I have it on my aluminum interior Tubbed 65 Malibu and it made a Hell of a difference.

BTW, is this what you're after?

Tahoen,I just re-read this whole thread and I gotta hand it to you.To go through all this trouble just to hids a few inches of Gas Tank..http://www.rcjimsplace.com/invision/style_emoticons/default/thewave.gif

I allmost forgot about this thread:lol:

Well, Here's your update.. I been alittle bummed out about the whole gas tank thing but, I'm feeling alittle better about thing now.

After I got all the vent hoses and stainless steel braided fuel lines and everything double clamped, I was getting gas fumes coming out the ends of the braided fuel line,
http://img.photobucket.com/albums/v220/tahoen/gastank/0afb91ec.jpg

I bought a cable cutter to make sure all the ends where good, Redid the ends twic and it was still leting out fumes.Where I bought them the guy said he never heard of them lines leting out fumes, I even went there to have the guy look at and smell it them in person..I even have a gas detector a buddy let me use and it goes off as soon as I put it by the ends...I called rick's(where I bought te gas tank) They said They have heard of fumes caming from them lines and told to switch over to aluminum gas line, So thats what I did and I'm happy to say no more fumes:happy:

http://img.photobucket.com/albums/v220/tahoen/gastank/bf01337f.jpg
http://img.photobucket.com/albums/v220/tahoen/gastank/f9f17c4b.jpg

http://img.photobucket.com/albums/v220/tahoen/gastank/1399cd4b.jpg

So everything is hooked up and bolted down and works great..The only thing left to do is box it in and that should do it for the gas tank relocation project..

Those hand helds can be tricky with anything bigger than 3/8 OD tubing.

Thanks, I just spent 4 hours saturday doing the Meguiars 3 step wax. Of course after I started a bird parked over head and took a huge dump on the roof. Needless to say it didn't get waxed yet. :D

Once you remove your rear bumper and replace it with a roll pan,the Gas tank hangs below the pan line maybe 3-5 inches. Raising the tank gives it a much nice cleaner look
