View Full Version : changing seat upholstry Devildog240 02-13-2006, 11:32 PM how easy/hard it is to take the upholstry on NBS seats now to put new upholstry on? sack 02-14-2006, 01:57 AM time consuming really, and your fingers may get a little cut up when dealing with the sharp metal inside the seats. but i always took the seats out of the vehicle, the took of all the side plastics, un bolted the bottom of the seat and started stripping. if you have the armrests that fold down, that makes it more fun . . . just use a pair of channel locks(pliers are too pointed) to grab the 'hog rings' and twist them 180 degrees and pull them out. (hog rings are the metal clips inside the seat that hold the material to a bar inside the foam of the seat to get the nice pulled in lines, examples; the horizontal and vertical lines that you sit on and your back rests upon) you will need hog ring pliers and hog rings to attatch the new material maybe $25 for all that you will need, not sure though. if you are careful you shouldn't break anything, and work the wrinkles out of the leather by pushing it around. for 2 seats i'd say 4-5 hrs, for front and back(bench) plan for 8, any more than this would be a weekend and beer good luck 97Silverado 02-14-2006, 02:23 AM time consuming really, and your fingers may get a little cut up when dealing with the sharp metal inside the seats. but i always took the seats out of the vehicle, the took of all the side plastics, un bolted the bottom of the seat and started stripping. if you have the armrests that fold down, that makes it more fun . . . just use a pair of channel locks(pliers are too pointed) to grab the 'hog rings' and twist them 180 degrees and pull them out. NBS seats do NOT have hog rings. They use a plastic channel fastener to hold the covers down. For the vertical/horizontal channels they use a nice looped velcro. I swapped my cloth seat covers to leather in about an hour (BOTH seats), not including taking the seats out or re-installing. NBS seats are super easy!! Devildog240 02-14-2006, 07:51 AM but I am not changing to leather. I am just puting different clothe seats in place of my old worn out ones, but reguardless it should be about a 4 hour total deal. Removal, take off, put on, reinstall, step back and admire? sack 02-14-2006, 01:44 PM D'oh! i forgot, those seats do have those rubber like straps in the seats an all, sorry. i was just going off of what work i had done at an upholstery shop 1.5 yrs ago, and i had done a ton of different kinds of vehicles, hard to remember which is which without looking at it. but are you taking the material off of a different seat and putting it on yours? i would just swap the seats entirely if that was your plan. and if you are purchasing a kit that is clothe, why not spend a lil extra for leather? and 97silverado is right, with that style seat, it shouldn't take as long as i had posted, i was just refering to the vehicles in the past that i did with armrests and the side panel leather, and since you would be new at it i added a lil time too. Devildog240 02-14-2006, 03:35 PM I got some darker clothe covers from another member's truck. Plus I really don't dig leather tarheel6869 02-14-2006, 03:46 PM I have no experience with interior stuff like this, is this something I could do relatively easy without having to worry too much about messing stuff up? Also, where could I get a leather kit and about how much? gabe8501 02-14-2006, 07:53 PM They use a plastic channel fastener to hold the covers down.
