daytime running lights

Newb this site. Have just received a 96 K1500. Has daytime running lights. Did a search with no results.

1. Is this a permanent thing?
2. can I shut them off?
3. If so, How?

Howdy: I read thru all the post and got hung up on OBS and NBS.

Since my first pickup was a 66 Chevy, My second a 77 and now this 96, Spanning 40 years. I'm not up on GM/Chev. Technology or abreviations.

Been a Jeep man since 86, but they quit making pickups some time ago. AND I have a thing for Chevy Pickups, you'll notice.

Bear with me..... Is the Dome overide button that thang under the light switch for the head and dash lights that pushes in and out and does nothing I can see?

Also I checked the owners manual and they say,"There it is".... Dang if it ain't!!!!

I got tired of driving with only one because the other one blew and replacing them all the time. Took out the only good one left shook it till it broke reinstalled it and problem solved. If I need driving lights I turn the switch to on.

what i do is click my e-brake in one time and it will work

Thanks everyone I have some directions to go now. I'm hoping I understand the E-brake trick?? Do you kick it down a notch or set it and then release it after startup or such?

i was asked by the guard at the local AF base to turn mine off pulling up (so as not to blind them) but had to explain that i couldn't. :lol: i'll have to try the E-brake trick. good info bro.

The dome overide keep your dome lights from coming on when you open your door. On some OBS 96-98 i think if you push it in and out like 5 times it does something i read it in a owners manual.
It might cut off your day time lamps. can't remeber for sure

Its so easy for a 96-98 obs I cant belive none of you know this.
Open drivers door-pull cover off of fuse box on side of dash-look at cover-find the letters DRL on the covers list-go to that spot on the fuse box-remove fuse-put cover back on-start the truck-walk to the front of the truck-look at headlamps.WOW!!!!!
Long story short,PULL THE DRL FUSE.
P.S.99-02 press dome light button on-off 2 times in a row NOT 5 times.This will shut off DRL.:charge:

WOW!!!! Thanks everyone! Works great. I did pull the fuse too. I don't intend to put fog lights on but want to put Deer screamers on. Those little plastic gizmos...??

I know this is probably simple but what is "obs" and "nbs" with the chebby line?

you can shut them off by either the fuse or your light switch on your dash board. but merely just turning the switch to the left to where you see the O symble. that just temperaraly does it but it does cut them off until you turn your vehicle on the next time.

On the '96 I don't think you can use the light switch to turn the DRLs off. Dad always just clicks his parking brake down one notch if he wants them off on his '96.

On my '01 1500 HD, I can push the dome override button 4 times fast and there will be one chime and the result will be no DRLs AND ALSO it disables the auto-on headlights, which like to turn on in the middle of the day in my carport. when the key is turned off and then back on, this defaults back to normal and has to be done again.

My buddy's '06 1500 he can turn the light switch left and it springs back and the DRLs stay off until the key is turned off & on again.

Me, I don't mind them because I never have to look at them, so why do I care if they are on or off?

Kinda like the ugly orange clearance lights on the top of my cab... I don't like them much but I don't have to look at them while I'm driving downthe road, so I don't really mind 'em.

Either pull the DRL fuse, take out the DRL bulbs or
