While removing rear view mirror I broke out a piece of windshield leaving a hole (no cracks, doesn't go to outside surface ).

Can it be repaired without replacement???

If so, how???

You realize all you had to do was loosen a small set screw and slide the assembly upwards right?

I know now about the screw, I wanted to relocate the mirror up as high as possible.

The local auto glass place told me they can not use the chip repair junk (that ends up looking like glass).

He said the best we could do is to remount the mirror holder in the same spot, he thinks he can make it look O.K., and then just leave the mirror off untill inspection time.

Any other ideas or suggestions???

Chuck a baseball at the windshield and say you were at a game. In SC they will replace your glass and charge your insurance company. It wont raise your rates because its a safety item. Call your insurance company incognito and ask them.

I have driven PU trucks and big trucks, with and without trailers and have learned a long time ago to just use side mirrors, some people cant.

Now, being 6 foot 6 inches tall with a mirror on this 06 truck that is almost in the middle of the windshield creates an ENORMOUS blind spot to the right side for side roads and traffic.

I drive Fire Engines ,Ladder trucks , and Ambulances now with side view mirrors only, point being

I dont need a ****ing rear view mirror, not important to me, and only causes a blind spot.

Never thought of it like that. I see your point. Still if it didn't feel like it wanted to come off you should have just slid the mirror off and let the bracket be.

Like I said I didn't know about the screw I just thought it was some glue.

It came off easy to me, chunk of glass and all, just glad it didn't break completly through to the outside of the windshield.

What does an 06 windshield go for, a 1000.00???? or more????

No only $900 installed  stealership that is but you could get one for $200 or $300 and another $150 to install it. If its not that big i would leave it not worth all the money for a little flaw.

I just had my windshield replaced for that very reason. But mine fell off and took glass with it.

i know here in FL all you have to do is say you were behind a simi or rock truck and it kicked up a rock and busted it and as long as you have full coverage they replace it for free, and your rates dont go up.

Wow you guys are paying that much for windsheild replacements? My stepdad runs a used truck lot and we change windsheilds alot and the 99 and up chevy trucks cost less than $200 cad with taxes included. they used be a lot more when speedy was the only glass place in town but after some competition came in prices dropped in half even at speedy. stay away from dealerships if saving money is a concern.

In my area there is a mobile auto glass guy. He will come to you and did a good job for me. He charged a lot less than anybody else with a drive-in shop. I found his business in the local easy-ad.
