View Full Version : Changing interior color?

Has anyone successfully changed their interior color? Mine is blue, and I would really like it to be grey. I thought about painting all of the plastic pieces gray, and swapping in gray carpet and seats, but I'm not sure how well the paint will stick to the plastic. The good part is that my interior is in excellent shape, so I could probably sell my seats and carpet for a couple hundred bucks on ebay. Is there anywhere I could just buy the leather seat covers?
If anyone here has had luck painting interior pieces, what did you use to scuff the plastic before painting? I thought about trying steel/brass wool, or maybe a brillo pad.

To do a full conversion, you're looking at a long road if you're planning on actually doing the painting etc. yourself. I would hit up the junkyards in search of interiors from a grey Silverado. That would be much easier, and potentially cheaper in the long run.
I've painted plastic both successfully and unsuccessfully. The best thing to do to prep is to sand it down textureless, clean it with acetone, spray plastic adhesive promoter, paint, clear, wetsand, done... If you merely scuff it up with a brillo pad, you run the risk of the paint scratching off with a pass of the fingernail.

Yeah, I've seen many painted interiors that flake or scratch off like that. I'm not sure I like the look of high gloss interior panels though, I rather like the texture. I guess I'm stuck with blue for now.

I prefer the stock look as well. Don't discount the junkyards. The ones around here pull the parts themselves and inventory them, so you can call in advance and ask if they have what you're looking for. Good luck.

I used SEM plastic and vinyl color coat spray. They have tons of stock colors. Works well, but on hard travel areas like the kick panels I should have prepped better and put more coats on. I think I'm just going to "bed line" my kick panels and the door seal panels pieces then just add a clear coat over them so it matches the glossy black I ahve in my interior. It's not as shiny as it looks. They have gloss and flat colors
It's very tedious process
