Does it come off? I would like to paint it to match some other dash pieces. If it comes off, how do you get it off? I really don't want an air bag in my face, if you know what I mean.http://i103.photobucket.com/albums/m151/GBs_03/dash1.jpg

I have to go to the body shop Thursday morning. I guess I could ask them.

I don't know for sure but I believe once you get the dash cover off (big piece on top) there are a few 10mm bolts holding the cover on there...I'd disconnect the battery and pull the airbag fuse before working on it though just in case.

Yeah, definitely disconnect the negative battery cable. I want to know how to do this as well. I currently have my dash all apart getting painted. I was looking at the cover, but didn't want to pull it at all. There's a guy over at GMFS that has painted his, I'll PM him and see what I can find out.

My service manual shows it coming out all in one assembly, i.e. the cover and airbag and all the stuff that goes with it. Pretty much the way Blaze said it.

You don't really have to take the upper dash panel off but it does make it easier and since you are painting it, it will be safer for the new paint when you reinstall. There are two 10mm nuts or bolts that you have to remove, one in each vent and two undernieth (open the glove box all the way). Unplug the wiring and take the whole thing out. The cover is held to the airbag frame just by looping slotted holes over metal tabs. It comes off really easy. When I painted mine, I left it on. The cover is kinda flimzy so you need to hold onto it pretty well for prep and it works pretty well right out of the truck.
Good luck!

It is pretty easy if you take the top part of the dash off it will be even easier to get too. I just had my whole dash apart and painted everything it came out great. Otherwise you can take the air vents out and the oh **** handle for easier access. Then drop down glove box and there will be 3 bolts holding the bag mount in place just take those out and the whole assembly comes out. Then there are about 10 clasp type pieces of metal folded over it to keep it in place. Just get a screwdriver and fold those tabs back and the piece comes right off..
