View Full Version : temp/compass/dim mirror wiring - reverse signal?

I'm installing a compass/temp/dimming mirror from a late model truck into my 85 Camaro, which means the wiring isn't a plug and play deal. I've got everything figured out except for the reverse light signal. I don't want to tear my center console apart to get to that signal, but I don't know what to do with the mirror to make the auto dim function properly. Do I wire the pin 3 wire (backup up light signal) to +12, ground or leave it floating? Since I don't see how that signal would be pulled to ground when wired to the reverse lights, I'm guessing I leave it floating?

There seems to be some people who say tie it to +12, but that seems like it would disable the auto-dim entirely. Some say ground it, and most don't seem to say anything about it.

Thanks

I just did mine Monday night, I grounded the wire the the back up lights, works great. Thanks, but I'm really looking for a solution other than hooking to the backup lights. Because of my customization, it's a 2+ hour project to take my center console apart. I'm just trying to find out if anybody knows whether I should tie that signal to ground or leave it floating.

Sorry, I just reread my previous post, and can see that it did not make sense. What I meant to say is, the wire that should have gone to the reverse lights, I tied it in with the ground wire for the mirror.

I did not run it to the reverse lights. I soldered it in with the black wire(ground) from the mirror plug, then grounded both of them together. The mirror works fine in that configuation.

The green led on the front comes on, the mirror dims when lights are behind me, when I put gear selector in revese the mirror does not change.

Hope this clarifies how I did mine.

Thanks. That clears it up considerably. :)

You can leave it disconnected the mirror will always dim.
