has anyone ever had the dash lights down real low? Well I drove my truck tonight for about 5 miles and had the dash lights down cause I have dark tint and I cant see a damn thing....well I went to go turn that little wheel and almost burnt my thumb off. That wheel had gotten real hot. Has anyone else experienced this and if so could it cause any damage if I left my dash lights dim for a long time?

The dash light switch is notorious for shorting out...most likely this is what is happening

Yes mine gets warm as well, but not hot enough to acutally burn something. If yours gets that hot, the varible resistor might be getting cooked and will prolly eventually break down.

What happens is, to dim your lights you adjust that knob (varible resistor), in order to get the lights to dim some of the 12v has to be "removed" thats what the resistor does. As the resistance decreses, voltage is dropped (removed) across the resistor and less voltage is availible to the dash lights - so they dim. With the lights dimmed way down, most of the voltage is being dropped across that varible resistor. More voltage = more current passing thorugh the resistor, creating heat.

At any rate if its getting that hot, I dont think its normal.

I just had my lights dimmed last night for like 20 or so miles. Didn't get hot or even warm.

Yeah it takes a long time for mine to get warm - like 1.5 - 2 hours (took a long trip the other weekend when I noticed it).

Just re-read 01extended's post, says it happens to him in 5 miles!! ??? thats certainly not right, I'd be replacing the dimmer control I think.

Yeah, I was like wtf...that's why I thought I'd tell him I drove alot longer than that and mine didn't even get warm. I'd replace it with an Escalade one (don't you have to replace that whole unit just for the knob?) then get some matching a/c knobs. :rocking: I could be thinking of the headlight switch tho I dunno.

Mine gets real hot all the time, the light above the dimmer switch is burnt out as well. Now, just tonight, the dimmer switch doesn't work at all, so I don't have any dash lights unless it's turned all the way up. Looks like I'm going to have to put a new dimmer in it.

Also, in my HD, it has the running lights on the roof of the cab, why on earth did chevy put those lights on the same circuit as the dimmer controled interior lights? U dim the dashboard and the running lights dim with it... WEIRD

wow you resurected a really old post :D

in regards to your clearence light issue - they are not wired to the interior circuit, at least not from the factory. I'd be willing to bet that your clearence lights were added on (did you buy this truck new?) and whoever wired them up tapped into the dash lighting circuit instead of the parking light circuit.

No I just bought it a couple weeks ago. I'm almost possitive that they are OEM though. I think I remember seeing them on the original order sheet. It just doesn't make sense why they'd do that though so I understand where your coming from.

Ha, I was thinking the previous posts were only from 8/7, but I guess I didn't read the year (2002). :demon:
